People can ask questions about development, funding, and the future of the ecosystem. Open talks help everyone understand how they can build on Ethereum Classic. Funding is given based on progress, teams receive support when they complete development steps. This helps keep projects active and useful for the ecosystem. To see why this work matters, it helps to know the difference between Ethereum and Ethereum Classic. Both started from the same chain but later followed different paths. Double Spending in crypto Double spending is when someone tries to use the same cryptocurrency more than once. The attacker doesn’t create new coins, but tries to trick the network into accepting the same coins in two different transactions. If the network is slow to confirm transactions, both payments might look valid at first. This is called double spending, because the same coins are being spent twice. How Do Hackers Pull This Off? Hackers do this via different methods and one of them is the 51% attack, when someone controls more than half of a blockchain, allowing them to rewrite parts of the blockchain. The other methods varies depending on the resources and strategy of the attacker → Race attacks → Finney attacks → Zero-confirmation attacks → Selfish mining → Sybil attacks and others You may wonder, has this ever happened before? Yes, it has. Although not on the main Bitcoin network, it occurred on smaller blockchains like Bitcoin Gold and Ethereum Classic. This was done through 51% attacks. The hackers were able to reverse transactions and steal funds, which led to the loss of more than $65 million from the cases of Bitcoin Gold and Ethereum Classic alone. After the attack on Ethereum Classic, Ethereum’s developers created a new hard fork of the mainnet, which is what we now have as the current Ethereum blockchain. This was done to recover the stolen funds by creating a new blockchain where the hackers’ transactions were reversed, while the old blockchain continued as Ethereum Classic, where those coins remained. Although not everyone left the Ethereum Classic blockchain, so the Ethereum Classic community continued. The sad thing, though, is that the blockchain suffered more than three additional attacks. You may be thinking, “Dang! That’s terrible! Couldn’t they stop the attack?” Well, they did improve the system. One step they took was doing a Thanos Upgrade, which modified their Ethash consensus algorithm into what is now referred to as Etchash. If you are not yet following my page, do so now, as I will be talking more about consensus algorithms next. This modification of its previous system made future attacks harder and improved overall security. Consensus mechanisms played a major role in reducing the risk of double spending. Since blockchains don’t have a central authority watching them, the consensus mechanism acts as the backbone of their security. There are different types of consensus mechanisms, like Proof of Work and Proof of Stake. The main idea is that these systems help everyone agree on one version of the blockchain by deciding which transactions get added and in what order, so all users see the same correct record. With the consensus mechanism acting as a gatekeeper, most types of double spending are very difficult, because transactions must be agreed on by the network before they are confirmed. You are probably scared right now, but lol! You don’t need to be. Given that blockchain technology is still very much alive and thriving, it’s clear that the double-spending problem has been taken care of, for the most part. So, as a regular crypto user, double spending is probably not something you should lose sleep over, but blockchains as a whole can be (and have been) affected by it.
