My take: this is a genuinely important direction, but I would not jump straight to “replaces Notion or Obsidian” yet. What Google is nudging toward is a machine-readable knowledge layer where markdown files, links, metadata, and retrieval-friendly structure make it easier for agents to ingest, query, and update information.
The big advantage is not the markdown itself. It is the combination of portability, structure, and agent compatibility: plain text is easy to version-control, diff, mirror, and query, while interlinked files make it possible to build a living knowledge graph instead of a static note dump. That is very aligned with where agent tooling is going generally, since more systems are converging on markdown-based instructions, documents, and skill files.
What excites me most is the “digital brain” use case. If OKF really standardizes a directory of markdown docs with predictable conventions, then you can treat knowledge as modular, composable, and partially self-maintaining rather than locked inside a single app. For teams, that could mean fewer walled gardens, better agent retrieval, and easier long-term maintenance than a giant monolithic workspace.
That said, replacing Notion is a different claim from enabling better knowledge infrastructure. Notion wins on UX, visual editing, databases, collaboration, and low-friction capture; Obsidian wins on local-first control and backlinks; an OKF-style system would need to beat both on workflow, search, permissions, and editing experience before it becomes the default human interface. In practice, I expect it to complement those tools first, then gradually eat into the “knowledge base” layer underneath them.
My prediction is that the real winners will be hybrid stacks. Humans will still want a polished interface, but the source of truth will increasingly live in structured markdown repositories that agents can read, edit, and connect to other systems. If Google keeps pushing this hard, we may end up with “notes for humans” on top and “knowledge for agents” underneath.
So yes, this feels big. Not because markdown is new, but because standardizing knowledge for agents could become one of the foundational layers of the post-app internet.
