Learned the basics of the bounce-fire series from @KulaPerformance at the @universalspeedrating summit and have been implementing ever since that weekend with my athletes. It’s challenging and checks a tons of boxes as you run through the different variations. Typically I’ll learn something, test on myself, and then test on my athletes I’ve been working with for an extended amount of time. Started the day with sprint work before transitioning into RB training. Today’s focus was all mechanics: arms, projection angles, foot strike, and learning how to transition clean from acceleration into speed. Every rep had a purpose. Push out, strike under the hips, stay patient through the rise, then let speed build. The goal isn’t just to run hard. It’s to run efficient, powerful, and controlled. As a back, that same body control has to show up when setting up defenders, pressing a lane, making one cut, and exploding north. Today’s workout was about force application, not just lifting weight. Quick feet, 3/4 squats, pogos, step-up switches, depth drops, broad jumps, trap bar jumps, and single-leg box jumps. Everything had a purpose: strike under the hips, stay springy, reduce ground contact time, absorb force, and explode. Locked in a quick but efficient session today with Elijah. 4x10yd starts to dial in the drive phase 4x15yd sled sprints to build force and acceleration 4x20yd finishes to carry speed through the transition Had to move with urgency because of film, but still got quality work in. Rolled straight into RB development — agility, hip mobility, change of direction, pad level, foot speed, and decision-making. A lot packed into just over an hour, but everything intentional. Camp is getting close. Now it’s about stacking speed, sharpening the details, and expanding the bag every single session. No wasted reps. Example of how cueing and language can change out the outcome of a drill or even session. Truth be told we do this drill all the time and it’s called dribbles in our facility. I noticed specifically with this group they had gotten so “comfortable” with the drill that their intent had noticeably dropped. With that info and the fact that most of these ladies struggle with turnover/top end speed I decided to put an emphasis on switching quickly and turnover, giving the drill a new name completely. We had some 20-10 fly PR’s right after this video was filmed. Was it the new movement emphasis? Was it novelty driving engagement for session? Was it going to happen that day no matter what? Hard to tell, but we will keep working on it. The real message is as a coach you are in the drivers seat 💺 and you can create fresh experiences simply with the language you use. #coaching #speeddevelopment

Drill of the week Partner chase and flip! If the athlete makes it to the end of their line without being tagged they then flip to tag. Typically this drills ends from either a poor cut by your competitor or fatigue. Love implementing this one to get some hard decelerations into lateral change of direction. First lift back in the gym after my knee procedure. Lost a little weight while I was down so the goal now is getting back up to about 185 before summer camps. Today was all about moving right and building back up. Started with ¾ squats (4x4) working the same angles used when sprinting. Tried trap bar but it didn’t feel right on the knee, so we switched to a reverse V-bar runner stance squat, staying on the balls of our feet to match sprint mechanics. Loaded 45 and 25 on each side and hit 5x3. Finished with landmine split squat iso holds, 3 sets of 15 seconds each leg, again on the balls of our feet to reinforce sprint position and build stability. The focus tonight wasn’t grinding reps. Once the bar speed slowed down we shut it down. Longer rest so every rep stayed explosive and clean. No running tonight. Knee was sore, not hurt, which is expected getting back into it. Definitely frustrating but that’s part of the process. Upper body tomorrow and then tempo runs Thursday to start getting the knee used to moving again.
