In the past two decades, many university leaders across Western countries have shown a complete lack of conviction in academic freedom in the face of Chinese money.
Hi @UCBerkeley, Your PhD candidate U Min Zin runs what is perhaps the world’s leading Burma-focused think tank. He is a credit to your school doing cutting-edge, open-source research, but is now wrongfully detained by the PRC. Is “thoughts” really the best you can do? 👇 Try harder.

NEW: US and Iranian sources have expressed diverging interpretations of some key aspects of the recent US-Iran agreement. The full text of the agreement has not yet been published, which makes it difficult to ascertain which interpretations of the agreement are accurate. Other Key Takeaways: Iran’s interpretation of the agreement’s provisions about the Strait of Hormuz would constitute a significant strategic victory for Iran if its interpretation became the recognized reality. Iranian statements indicate that the regime defines an “open” strait as one that remains under Iranian management, which conflicts with US and global commercial interests. The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz depends on the risk calculus of shipping companies and captains. Continued Iranian threats against commercial shipping may have a negative impact on the willingness of companies and captains to resume transiting through the strait. Iran’s mine-laying activities and threats to mine the strait are also a key component of this effort. Hezbollah has signaled that it will adhere to the Lebanon ceasefire outlined in the US-Iran agreement and suggested that the group views the agreement as a precursor for Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon. Israeli officials have stated that the IDF will continue to operate in Lebanon to degrade Hezbollah. Hezbollah and Iran could make their implementation of the US-Iran agreement contingent upon the cessation of Israeli operations against Hezbollah in order to push Israel to halt these operations.

Overnight Russia struck a sacred 11th-century Christian cathedral in Kyiv and killed five emergency service workers in Kharkiv. I saw the destruction of irreplaceable history at Pechersk Lavra in Kyiv after strikes hit residential buildings and sent children to the hospital. Attacks against civilians and on sacred Christian sites are unacceptable. This outrage must stop and this war must end. Ambassador Davis

How popular were the Nazis among students? The New York Times reported in 1932 that the National Socialists were “by far the strongest political party” in student council elections that winter” at many universities. How did that compare to the rest of the German population? The Nazis were “probably about twice as strong in the universities as they are in the country generally.” Worth remembering as we ponder why in our own generation so many students are attracted to illiberal ideologies. (My answer here: youtube.com/watch?v=a2C90l7Y…) Source: NYT, January 17, 1932. "TO THE NAZI COLORS THE STUDENTS FLOCK; Crowding the German Universities, They Are the Sons of The Middle Class, to Whom Politico Is the New Romance," by Harold Callender, Section SM, Page 5.

One of the smartest things SEINFELD didwas build the show around Jerry’s strengths. Jerry rarely had to carry the biggest comedic moments. Those went to George, Elaine & Kramer, while Jerry played the straight man reacting to the madness around him.

Examples of an actor's limited range adding to the performance.

U.S. scholar U Min Zin went to China for a conference. He is now detained. The PRC unjustly detains more Americans than any other country, a reality that puts U.S. citizens at risk and chills academic and business exchanges. @USAmbChina should demand full transparency and access. nytimes.com/2026/06/11/us/po…
