The state knew the price tag would be enormous, estimating in Oct. it would cost $1B to run Alligator Alcatraz for 365 days. Now, Floridians are left questioning whether those funds — enough to give every FL public school teacher a $6k bonus — could have been better allocated.

"Alligator Alcatraz" was built in the Everglades without the environmental review the law requires. That's why we sued. A new Atlantic investigation breaks down the full story: the costs, the conditions, and what it means for the Everglades. ow.ly/7wri50Z7Yaq

"If Florida keeps growing ― and it will — we can choose: the same mass-built subdivisions, with their standard quarter- or third-acre lots, from Interstate 95 west, or find carefully selected areas to the east to increase the number of units per acre." tcpalm.com/story/opinion/col…

In the rush to ram his reform thru the legislature, the governor’s office completely forgot supervisors of elections, property appraisers, and tax collectors offices are funded by property taxes and had to amend their half baked proposal to make it make sense. 🤦🏻‍♂️

The Governor is about to become the unelected mayor of Volusia, Flagler, Hernando, and Sumter County. When Tallahassee controls your paycheck, Tallahassee controls your priorities.
🧵Legislators think they’re voting on property taxes. They’re actually voting on who controls local government. For 50 years, Florida’s deal was simple: local communities paid their own bills, and local voters held local officials accountable. Break that system, and the question isn’t what gets cut. It’s who takes control.

Important story on how a scientist's research on rare Gulf of Mexico Rice's whales was used misleadingly by politicians doing oil industry bidding to get around the Endangered Species Act. The whales, which occur off #Florida panhandle, face extinction. tampabay.com/news/environmen…

Very enlightening piece in the @nytimes on how agribusiness monopolies are hiking food prices.
Thrilled to publish this piece with @clairekelloway on one major cause of high food prices--market concentration--and a solution to it--breaking up and regulating agribusinesses

NEW: DeSantis' property tax plan contradicts itself, leaves key details vague and doesn't have the $500,000 homestead limit he keeps touting. And data centers, megacorporations and billionaires could benefit, too. tampabay.com/news/florida-po…

There is always a Florida connection. Maybe because it's such an easy place to get away with dirty campaign tricks...
1. Lead Left, a super PAC created on 4/24, purports to stand "against MAGA extremists." It has spent $3M in Democratic primaries. But it's funders and motivations have been secret. Until now. It's a GOP dirty tricks operation. 🧵

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis just signed a bill making it harder to sue mining giant Mosaic Co. over claims related to radiation exposure on redeveloped phosphate mines. Mosaic lobbyists wrote the bill. And Mosaic recently made a $50,000 donation to DeSantis-supporting Super PAC.

There has been a lot of Tallahassee-driven discourse over the past year about local governments abusing taxpayer resources, but it's the state that has failed to so far pass a budget, all while negotiating in a secretive process local governments are not allowed to engage in.

But what's clear is that the disagreements are being hashed out behind closed doors with no opportunity for the public or press to know what the source of conflict actually is. A guess is they don't want to meet until they have several deals across the board.
