Thx @guardian for inviting me to share these #LongCovid questions. One of the most agonizing parts of this condition has been waiting for the world to catch up with what we know about the disease - & the abysmal lack of urgency to do anything about it. /1 theguardian.com/world/commen…

God, we need infection prevention for airborne diseases everywhere immediately. Clean the air.

Yet another hit in the immunity debt hypothesis. Infections are ***fuckin' obviously*** not good for health And yet another great reason not to keep your children (and yourself) catching covid every year for the rest of your life

Today is my birthday. I turned 40. But nobody knows it anymore, except my close family. Because I am socially isolated due to Long Covid for four years now. People simply forgot me. They forgot us.

A thread today about Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies to various pathogens and why they seem to be elevated a lot in people with #LongCOVID, #MECFS, chronic #lyme/tick- and vector-borne illnesses and other complex chronic illnesses. First, let's start basic: what is IgG? 1/

Another study shows cerebral hypometabolism in #LongCovid patients with PEM. Cerebral hypometabolism is a decrease in the brain's ability to turn glucose into energy, leading to a severe cellular energy deficit. journals.sagepub.com/doi/ful…

i wonder if some of the supposed health benefits of the mediterranean diet might turn out to be from living in a mediterranean climate & as a result spending a lot of time outdoors / on patios, living well-ventilated spaces, etc, because the weather is so nice so much of the time

A new and important Social Determinant of Health! Explains why having clean air in schools is so important. Less respiratory infections in schools means more days of learning & less infections brought into the home to younger siblings and other family members.
Replying to @loscharlos
“The researchers estimate that half or more of the gap in life outcomes between older and younger siblings can be attributed to pathogens inadvertently brought home by older siblings.“ washingtonpost.com/climate-e…

Join RTHM, Patient-Led Research Collaborative (PLRC), Dr. Zachary Spiritos, and Dr. Binita Kane on June 12 at 9:30 a.m. PST // 12:30 p.m. EST // 5:30 p.m. GMT 1 for a live discussion on the new Long COVID Treatment Guide. The Long COVID Treatment Guide was created by PLRC and RTHM to spark meaningful conversations between patients and clinicians about treatment options that can be considered as part of a personalized care plan. It includes 24 prescription medications, along with a limited number of supplements, over-the-counter medications, procedures, and lifestyle strategies. Our panelists will discuss why this guide was created and how to best use it to explore treatment options available today while clinical trials are ongoing. Panelists include: Binita Kane, MD @BinitaKane Zachary Spiritos, MD, MPH Charlie McCone @loscharlos Jennifer Curtin, MD @jencurtinmd Register here: us06web.zoom.us/j/8738963156…

Great to see @VirusesImmunity last paper highlighted at @NatRevImmunol. One of the strongest pieces of evidence yet for autoimmunity in #LongCOVID. Not proof that autoimmunity explains all neurological Long COVID, but it's getting harder to dismiss as one important mechanism.

This is true, however it adds to the pile of reasons we need to invest in indoor air quality for our children. Allowing them to get infected with Covid over and over is not helping anything. There’s a growing pile of studies pointing to similar outcomes. We can reduce illness.

I couldn't be more excited around CODA's Craniocervical Dysfunction Initiative which includes an expert Steering Panel of 8 crossdisciplinary experts (Dr. Nancy Klimas, Dr. Petra Klinge, Dr. Lauren Natbony, Dr. Peter Rowe, Dr. Ilene Ruhoy, Dr. Mijail Serruya, Dr. Mikki Tal, Dr. Brayden Yellman) and 50 additional experts who will provide their insights and experience. CODA CCD studies Structural Mechanics (CCI, AAI, venous compressions, CSF leaks) and beyond - to truly unravel what in the head/neck may be driving symptoms. If ever you've thought, perhaps my structure is driving my pain, dizziness, fatigue, please stay tuned. It's important we dig deep to learn more: What classifies patients as having craniocervical dysfunction? Who are candidates for surgical interventions? What other treatments may be available? Can we better restore stability? Can we improve overall function? We know this is a big topic for many.
Understanding complex chronic illness starts with understanding how the body's systems work together. Structural Mechanics & Instability explores how connective tissue, the craniocervical region, and biomechanical forces may influence neural, vascular, and immune signaling. Researchers found autoantibodies in long COVID that target neural proteins and can directly cause symptoms. Patient IgG transferred to mice triggered fatigue, pain, weakness and balance problems, supporting autoimmunity as one mechanism. nature.com/articles/s41577-0…

I’ve always found it odd how relaxed parents can be about their little ones catching virus after virus. Some even thinking it’s “good for their immune system” 😬

Yet we don’t clean the air in schools and daycares, which drive illness. Make it make sense.

“In first months of life, roughly 85% of an infant’s calorie intake goes toward neural development. A serious infection can reduce how much a baby eats & divert calories away building a brain.” “it might impact brain development by diverting.. resources to fighting an illness.”
