One lesson I learned the hard way as a founder is that most investors make-up their minds in the first couple of minutes of a pitch. You can spend endless follow up meetings trying to convince them but it’s often an uphill battle. Much easier to fill the top of the funnel with new potential investors realizing that fundraising is really a numbers game 🎲

Chime vs Monzo vs Nubank Nubank is a monster built around lending which drives ~80% of revenues. $12 to serve a customer (more than 100x better than Chime) and a $7 CAC. Monzo has room to grow as it expands its lending book but it's clearly not a primary account for most
Chime vs Monzo. Recent Forbes article on Chime gave some updated data points so thought I would see how Chime stacked up vs Monzo. Chime ARPU vs Monzo is impressive but high CAC. Would think Chime has a lot more room to grow in US but Monzo less so in UK on consumer side.

One constant piece of advice I give to Founders: Be uncompromising about the problem you're trying to solve but be flexible regarding the solution. While this sounds simple, it’s actually difficult for many strong personalities to accept. They obsess about a problem and can articulate facts about the competition, the market need, and why conditions are finally right for a solution to emerge (good tenacity). But sometimes they insist that their initial solution is the only answer to the problem (bad tenacity = stubbornness). They can easily get over-invested in the work it took to get from Point A to Point B and want to force traction to "prove" they're on the right track. But sometimes when a business arrives at Point B the current plans need to be scrapped because the market isn’t reacting the way you want it to. While this can hurt a Founder's ego and confidence quite badly, many times it’s better to re-trench than march forward. So, while I’ve met many brilliant Founders in my journeys, I’ve never met one who’s 100% right 100% of the time. The best you can hope for is that they’re 100% right about the problem they’re attacking and that they’ll learn as much as they can as efficiently as they can and figure out the solution on the way. Always remember that seeing and interpreting market feedback with clarity is possible but being right out of the gate is a fantasy standard.

Agree. Most VC's have not built enough companies to have earned the right to advise founders. Making the wrong choice of VC is the founders fault. Just getting a "VC job" doesn't qualify you to advise founders. Whose opinion to trust on what topic is the most important thing founders do.

💯 but many VCs lack practical operational experience, yet they engage with unconventional entrepreneurial operators. Conversely, startups often hesitate to fully disclose their challenges to their investors due to them holding the purse.
