THREAD: There’s a lot of talk right now about crime in San Francisco. Almost everything you’ll read in the mainstream press is wrong. I live in the Tenderloin and work in the courts every day. Here’s my take on what’s happening and why.

Always glad to see anyone wake up, but it’s an absolute indictment of the center-left, such as it is, that it took pics of dying, skeletal babies w trash bags for diapers to muster this pale response. Subtext: we can stomach mass bombings, but starvation is a bridge too far.

Fascinating shift on Israel in the last few days from a very wide range of center-left politicians & voices that had previously defended the country’s conduct

Trying to imagine the news coverage if Hamas ambushed and then point-blank executed a team of Israeli medics, then buried 15 in a mass grave along with their ambulances. My great grand children would hear about it.

This scene gets even worse when you read that ICE may not even have been going after the right guy and this man has full lawful status as a derivative beneficiary of his wife’s asylum win. ICE hasn’t provided any reason for why they arrested him or why he’s being detained. None.
A Guatemalan immigrant with no Massachusetts criminal record was arrested Monday on Tallman Street after federal agents shattered the glass on his vehicle as he and his wife waited inside the car for their lawyer to arrive. This is the kind of scene you’d expect in Russia. Secretive arrests, shattered glass, no criminal record—just fear and force. And now it’s happening on American soil.

I cannot begin to tell you how much community labor went into filing this. It is, to date, the largest civil rights suit filed in defense of Palestine solidarity activism on a university campus. For more information, also see: peoplevucla.com theintercept.com/2025/03/20/…

Last night’s article in the Washington Post about D.C. police responding to a 911 call by illegally letting DOGE onto private property is unlike any news story I have ever read. Every single person should read this article and think about where our society is going.

Being a large corporation is great because when you steal money from people instead of prison or even a punitive fine you just say “oops sorry jk” and payback what you stole and everyone moves on. This option, weirdly, is not available for people who shoplift razors from CVS.

You passionately supported the premiere murderer of the overwhelming majority of these journalists: Israel. It’s astonishing you would have the audacity to tweet this given your personal role in facilitating Israel’s killing spree unleashed again our colleagues.
124 journalists were killed last year. The deadliest year for reporters on record. A free press is at the core of democracy. It is necessary to safeguard human rights. We must keep up the work to protect journalists from coercion and murder, and safeguard their critical work.
Community note
Out of the 124 journalists who were killed in 2024, it's reported from CPJ that 82 were killed at the hands of the Israeli military in Gaza and Lebanon amid the war. Killings of journalists also occurred in Sudan, Pakistan, Mexico, Syria, Myanmar, Iraq and Haiti. cbsnews.com/news/journalis… amp.cnn.com/cnn/world/2024…

Nine paragraphs into today's NYT story on the situation with the Gaza ceasefire, readers are informed that Israeli officials and international mediators "said that Hamas’s claims were accurate."
As it has been for 15 months, the narrative about who is obstructing a Gaza ceasefire is upside down. Since the ceasefire officially went into effect Jan. 19, Israel has repeatedly violated it by shooting & killing Palestinians and continuing to withhold aid, tents, mobile homes.

How do you think MLK would have voted on the Laken Riley Act? I wonder whether you seriously considered the harm your yes vote helped enable. Either way, you should be ashamed.
Today we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His words and actions remain an inspiration to us all as we work to build the future he dreamed of for our communities and country.

Nothing San Francisco has done to criminalize drug use and homelessness has helped anyone. Least of all those suffering. Incredible Dorsey wants us to ignore that his own past (and recent) drug use did not subject him to state violence.

Nothing San Francisco has done to tolerate or enable public drug use has helped anyone — least of all those captured by deadly addictions. Thank you, Mayor @DanielLurie, for an ambitious start to bring solutions as big as the problems Sixth Street is facing.

Laken Riley is not a border security bill. It’s odd to see the Latino split when it’s Mexican nationals & Mexican-Americans who will be the most impacted by its enforcement provisions, based on the fact that Latinos in border states are already subject to warrantless enforcement
Replying to @madrid_mike
Democrats can no longer afford to do nothing on border security. It’s not an option. They played that game for decades and blew up in their face. No more moral victories especially when real people are being hurt.

Arresting people for drug use is not a serious strategy for San Francisco. It has been the strategy for San Francisco since 2021. And it has FAILED. The biggest problem? There is not enough treatment infrastructure!
