Shoutout to those who believe denying #ClimateChange is smart. It only permits Trump & others to rollback laws that cleanse our land, water, & air, reduce microplastics & forever chemicals, while increasing corporate $. #Pollution makes us all sick. Wake up and hug a grandchild.
#DrPhil argues #DonaldTrump can’t be wrong all of the time, thus anti-Trumpers have to learn to accept when he is right, as with #IranWar. By this sound logic, cons must accept libs like #NancyPelosi or #MarkCarney are sometimes right. Oh, and the Constitution is sometimes wrong.

"There is, or should be, an intent behind all military communications: we are always trying to persuade audiences to see the world as we do." And, "Western military strategic communications does, and should, aim to influence domestic audiences."
#Canada's policy states: "Government communications must be objective, factual, non-partisan, clear, & written in plain language." Is this idealistic? Yes. But in democracies citizens need to know their governments are not always working to make them "see the world as we do."
In the increasingly contested & hostile information domain, flooded with mis- and disinformation, perhaps Western governments & militaries need to be working harder to reduce "spin" & "influence" so that citizens have credible facts that allow them to make up their own minds.
@EmmaLBriant@WHMTE Respectfully, @Jay_Janzen@SHAPE_NATO, that "one cannot not communicate," or that "all communications influence," are self-evident statements. The question here is whether #NATO or Member Nations should deliberately use influence against their own citizens.
Thirty NATO Allies disagree. In 2019 policy was approved that says ‘all communications influence.’ All NATO communications to citizens are values-based, factual, and transparent. NATO teaches according to agreed policy.
The paper discussed states: "New [NATO stratcom] courses will clearly explain military communications—including those targeted at domestic audiences—as influencing activities ... these courses require a reframing of what some attendees have been told their national mandate is."
Compelling read on foreign interference (FI) & public service ethics. The threat of FI is real & must be unmasked. But transparency must start with #Canada's Government. "Why I blew the whistle on Chinese interference." #foreigninterference@globeandmailtheglobeandmail.com/opinion/…
Great piece @washingtonpost. Not so long ago we were talking about the Internet reinvigorating #Democracy. Then the #Tyrants caught on. Those who can still express their opinions freely should be thankful, but also worried--and actively exercising that freedom. #FreedomofSpeech
They clicked once. Then came the dark prisons.
This is a remarkable piece in the @washingtonpost analyzing how authoritarian states are cracking down on political prisoners in the digital age.

Great to see Commander, Canadian Army @Army_Comd_Armee, active on Twitter, but would love to see more substance! Declarative statements do little to inform—the tweet below is even nonsensical. BTW, an earlier tweet that misuses “flaunt” (should be “flout”) was not corrected.

Excellent @maddow podcast on the 1930s’ rise of American fascism with striking parallels and lessons for the present. Indeed, at times the podcast sounds eerily like the present. podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcas…
Kudos to colleague @TimDunne for his long service in #CanadianArmedForces and his continued contributions to public debate about Canadian defence & security. His latest piece raises legitimate questions about a mindset that prevailed as to how to improve military communications.
In the face of an increasingly complex and hostile information environment, some believed #Canada's military should shift from informing to influencing Canadians and other audiences, to include by using techniques common to marketing and advertising.
Yes, the military needs the tool box to operate across the inform-influence spectrum, especially against adversaries. But Canadians need & deserve timely, truthful information in the face of rampant mis- and #disformation--not more spin. #CAFPublicAffairs
