Just to add some additional clarity to the whole WordPress situation: Matt has publicly stated that WP Engine either had to give 8% of their revenue (which would be tens of millions of dollars per year) to his for profit corporation that’s raised nearly $1 billion dollars in venture capital, or hire a legion of developers to be paid by WP Engine but essentially report to Matt to do whatever he wants them to work on at no cost or expense to him.
His so called “offer” to WP Engine was either an 8% tax, or buy him developers that he can dictate what they work on.
These were his demands, either pay his mafia fee or give him equivalent resources to control just to exist.
While I do believe companies should contribute to open source projects, they should never be forced to do so under threat of extortion.
Does this seriously sound reasonable to anyone? Is there any open source project in the world who demands anyone who uses their open source project pay an 8% tax? Didn’t think so.
