As an avid cyclist, I was amused to see ChatGPT's “powerful new image engine" draw a bicycle with the "brake" label pointing to empty space where brakes are sometimes found on other bicycles. The point of these AI fails (regularly collected by @garymarcus) is not that LLMs are useless or unintelligent but that they think differently from humans, lacking explicit knowledge of reality and instead amalgamating billions of statistical generalizations. open.substack.com/pub/garyma…

I'm a software engineer with 50 years of experience. If you know how to steer an LLM properly, the frontier models are extremely good at generating code. They're weak at architecture, which is one of several reasons you want a human in the loop, but they can have a very low error rate compared to most humans.
When they don't - when they generate slop - it's because you didn't know how to use the tool correctly.

Sure—your core argument: Aphasia studies (e.g., Fedorenko et al. 2024) show no correlation between language deficits and reasoning impairments, but this doesn't prove language (or proto-symbolic components) isn't foundational to reasoning. Correlation ≠ causation, and dismissing language's role overstates the evidence. The OP muddies things by conflating cognition with reasoning in LLMs. Spot on for cautioning against overgeneralization!

Only the mediocre artists are threatened by Ai. This is going to be a pop-media blast. While we should all take a principled stand against synthetic art, unless you’re carving the David out of marble I don’t want to hear the crybags whine about Ai stealing “m’uh furry fan-art jobs”.
Real-time, high-quality shows and video games at scale, customized to the individual, next year.
Medium to high resolution real-time video will technically happen this, but too expensive for mass market.
