A new species to science!
This spider, Australoechemus vickyae, was first seen on Ascension in 1957 but was not identified until this year. It is named after Vicky Wilkins, who is a long-standing #UKOT invertebrate conservationist.

We were privileged to have Vicky Wilkins from the Species Recovery Trust, who has supported Trust projects for several years. Being her first time on the island, she had a jam-packed schedule, which included freshwater training and assisting with Golden Sail Spider surveys.

Very exciting to see the beautiful Northern Dune Tiger Beetle yesterday. Found in only 2 locations in the UK - coastal sand dunes of Merseyside & Cumbria. They're one of the world's fastest beetles & are voracious hunters - dismembering their prey with their very large mandibles!
