So important! Fundamental discoveries takes a long time. Applications that could be huge for humanity are often not apparent at the start. If we only fund applied science, we will discover less. This is as relevant to ecology & conservation as it is to biotechnology.
How strong is the evidence for pain in insects? The idea has often been dismissed, but an emerging new picture suggests it should now be taken very seriously. We've just released a full review of all the current evidence (free to read here) (1/4): authors.elsevier.com/a/1g4sk…

Good example of why it's so important that we clearly communicate what pesticides we're actually testing. The paper cited tested a product containing glyphosate and a range of co-formulants, either could be driving the effect. Yet it's being used to support a ban on glyphosate.
ALT Researchers at the Universities of Turku and Oulu, Finland, found glyphosate-based herbicides like Roundup, affect the learning and memory of bumblebees. Field-realistic doses affected their ability to learn and memorize connections between colors and taste. The weakened fine color vision severely impaired bumblebees’ foraging and nesting success.
Bayer-Monsanto is already killing off important pollinators with their neonicotinoid insecticides, a plethora of studies show. Now, evidence is mounting that glyphosate, because of its widespread use, is having a profound effect also. We have a mountain of studies showing the myriad ways that glyphosate harms human health.
Glyphosate-based herbicides must be banned.

We look forward to seeing you in Dublin in January!
A huge congratulations to @aoreilly28 who submitted her PhD yesterday. Alison has been looking at pesticides & beneficials in agroecosystems, with a special focus on widely used insecticides and implications for bee behaviour & pollination. Great job Alison! #proudsupervisor
In January we will be welcoming one of our plenaries: Professor Jens Christian Svenning - Aaarhus University, ERC awardee and Director of the Center for Biodiversity Dynamics in a Changing World. Registration is now open: irishecologicalassociation.o…
New paper by Neil Mahon (UCD; MWCM) describing how success of timed pollinator counts depends on where, when, and how long you look! Important considerations if comparing pollinators over multiple sites and/or performing long term monitoring. @N_E_Mahon @JaneCStout@ucdagfood
