The Gist: Too Wrong to Fix
The Irish Government has been telling people its mass surveillance law didn't need to be submitted to the EU. Then, just before Christmas, they tried anyway.
This is the Gist.

Baffling to me how some commentators take the Ombudsman decision as requiring new monitoring to be undertaken when this is their official summary. Improvements are always welcome and it's an important role of an Ombudsman to give that independent feedback.
In closing our inquiry, we have found @EU_Commission's practice of collecting information to monitor 🇮🇪 implementation of the 🇪🇺 #GDPR satisfactory overall.
We have, however, suggested a number of technical improvements.

@EUombudsman did miss an opportunity, in my view, to extend this monitoring by @EU_Commission to all EU Member State Supervisory Authorities as a standard monitoring measure.
(6/6) @iccltweet's opening paragraph in their press release perhaps can be read as "@EUombudsman tells @EU_Commission to keep doing what they are doing but improve it".
Hmm.. I think the @ICCLtweet headline here is a bit misleading.. bit.ly/3v4K9oN
The @EUombudsman didn't introduce a new monitoring requirement. They looked at an existing monitoring measure.... (1/n)
(4/n) In @EUombudsman conclusion "The European Commission’s practice of obtaining a bi-monthly overview from the @dpcireland on the latter’s handling of ‘big tech’ cases, including cross
border cases, is appropriate and in line with good administration."
(5/n) The @EUombudsman suggestion for improvement in the process amounts to "stick it in a structured spreadsheet lads and ladies, so it can be tracked more easily". Not a damning indictment of @DPCIreland by any means.
Nope - and also not legal in parts of the US or under their FTC consent decree, but I guess you make bad choices when you gut the teams in charge of compliance, trust and safety, legal, etc.
NIST retired SHA1 hashing function. It's officially out of state of the art, and another reason why any scheme, if for any reason, is using it for password generation/management is infringing #GDPR. nist.gov/news-events/news/20…
Two of @Mozilla's fellows, @Abebab and @rajiinio, have constructively critiqued the highly touted and overhyped large language models - ChatGPT (a question-answering chatbot) and Galactica (a tool for scientific writing). Take a read.

I have just discovered this obituary for Susan Leigh Anderson. Susan (along with her husband Michael) innovated "Machine Ethics" back in the early 2000's and led the way in developing what is now called #aiethics. She was a true innovator. @MachineEthicslegacy.com/us/obituaries/leg…
