Thomas Szasz, the man the entire profession tried to erase, looked straight into the camera and said: “We do not have an epidemic of mental illness. We have an epidemic of psychiatry.” Too fat → illness Too thin → illness Too happy, too sad, too much sex, too little sex → all illnesses No free will, no responsibility left — only “chemical imbalances” fixed by products you can advertise on TV while alcohol cannot. Jack Straw
The above meshes very well with America's reigning worldview, evolutionary materialism. This is
the worldview of nihilism--no meaning, no purpose, no free will, no mind, no soul, no person. So what is man but a chance product of evolution working on matter.
America was not founded on ancient pagan materialism but Christianity. Here all humans are the created creatures of the living, conscious Divine Mind, the Word (John 1)
So man is His image bearer endowed with conscious mind, free will, and soul--the seat of personality and emotions. Man is a person because the living, conscious Divine God is personal. He is a soul because God endowed man with a living personal soul.
Here is the source of our Constitutional rights such as life, because the living Word is Life, and free speech because we are conscious minds who think, speak, and choose.
