The fight against antimicrobial resistance will not be won by science alone. It will be won through solidarity, trust and political courage.
I saw that spirit clearly at the
#WHA79 side event hosted by Belgium, bringing health leaders from the
@WHO_Europe and
@WHOAFRO Regions together for an interregional dialogue on access to innovation, medicines and diagnostics, and tackling AMR.
My sincere thanks to Amb.
@ChPayot, Permanent Representative of Belgium in Geneva, for hosting this important event.
A powerful moment came when
@SandraGallina, Director-General for
@EU_Health, expressed readiness to support Africa’s Ebola response in exchange with my brother
@ProfJanabi.
The evidence shared by Prof. Enis Barış and Mr Deusdedit Mubangizi and other speakers was clear: access to essential medicines has not improved enough, and AMR is widening deadly gaps between and within regions.
I also appreciate the contributions from Minister Akmaral Alnazarova of Kazakhstan, Dr Dirk Ramaekers of Belgium, Dr Sharmarke Sharif of Ethiopia, Dr Karin Tegmark Wisell of Sweden, and our moderator Professor Elias Mossialos, whose guidance helped ground the discussion in country experience and practical policy choices.
The realities differ. In Africa, the burden falls heavily on children. In Europe, older adults are especially affected. But across both Regions, the task is shared: move from a tale of two realities to joint action.
