With our thanks to all distinguished speakers and panelists for their valuable insights.
The fight against antimicrobial resistance will not be won by science alone. It will be won through solidarity, trust and political courage. I saw that spirit clearly at the #WHA79 side event hosted by Belgium, bringing health leaders from the @WHO_Europe and @WHOAFRO Regions together for an interregional dialogue on access to innovation, medicines and diagnostics, and tackling AMR. My sincere thanks to Amb. @ChPayot, Permanent Representative of Belgium in Geneva, for hosting this important event. A powerful moment came when @SandraGallina, Director-General for @EU_Health, expressed readiness to support Africa’s Ebola response in exchange with my brother @ProfJanabi. The evidence shared by Prof. Enis Barış and Mr Deusdedit Mubangizi and other speakers was clear: access to essential medicines has not improved enough, and AMR is widening deadly gaps between and within regions. I also appreciate the contributions from Minister Akmaral Alnazarova of Kazakhstan, Dr Dirk Ramaekers of Belgium, Dr Sharmarke Sharif of Ethiopia, Dr Karin Tegmark Wisell of Sweden, and our moderator Professor Elias Mossialos, whose guidance helped ground the discussion in country experience and practical policy choices. The realities differ. In Africa, the burden falls heavily on children. In Europe, older adults are especially affected. But across both Regions, the task is shared: move from a tale of two realities to joint action.

🌈On #IDAHOT, we stand strong for equality & human rights for all. Equality for LGBTQI people is essential to building inclusive & democratic societies, as true democracy can't exist while LGBTQI individuals face persecution, whether through legislation or societal practices.

Public health leadership means taking decisions today that protect people tomorrow. Belgium’s Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke is doing exactly that. In Brussels today, I thanked Minister Vandenbroucke for putting prevention first – from tobacco control to advancing Belgium’s sepsis plan and strengthening health systems. Belgium’s decision to ban flavored e-cigarettes is a major step to reduce the appeal of vaping to young people and help prevent a new generation from nicotine addiction. I commended Belgium for its support to @WHO, including increased voluntary contributions for research on tropical diseases and sexual and reproductive health, while maintaining funding for equitable access to vaccines and medicines. This is the spirit of the @WHO_Europe-Belgium Country Cooperation Strategy we signed today: strong national action matched by a commitment to global health.

#Belgium Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister @prevotmaxime visited @WHO, and I was honoured to welcome him and thank him in person for his country’s continued support to @WHO and its increased financial contribution. We discussed WHO’s ongoing reforms and strengthening, the proposed new global health architecture to be discussed at #WHA79, the hantavirus response, and WHO’s critical role in global health security. The Deputy Prime Minister is not only a champion for health among world leaders, but he also walks the talk by keeping himself healthy through regular hikes.
🇺🇳 Good to meet @DrTedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus today and to reaffirm Belgium's commitment to the @WHO. Not just in words, but in funding. Despite budgetary pressures across the board, Belgium has increased its voluntary contributions. More for research on tropical diseases. More for sexual and reproductive health. Maintained funding for equitable access to vaccines and medicines. We do this because it is smart. Viruses do not carry passports. A disease contained in one country is a crisis prevented in ours. Right now, the WHO is coordinating the response to a hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship: hundreds of passengers, multiple nationalities, one organisation holding it together. That is what the WHO does, quietly, every single day. COVID taught us how interconnected we are. We should not need to learn that lesson again. Belgium also pushes for ambitious reform of the global health architecture. The WHO must be at the centre, with stronger leadership, greater coherence, and governance built on equity, solidarity and human rights. Reform is not a threat to the WHO. It is what makes it indispensable. Thank you Dr. Tedros. Belgium stands with WHO. @BelgiumMFA @BelgiumUNGeneva

Thank you Minister @prevotmaxime for demonstrating 🇧🇪's steadfast commitment to human rights, international law and multilateralism.
🇺🇳 Today in Geneva, I represented Belgium for its 4th Universal Periodic Review at the @UNHumanRights Council. An exercise where every UN member state has its human rights record examined by its peers. All 193 countries, on equal footing. Some might ask: why would a country voluntarily submit itself to scrutiny? Because that is exactly the point. Speaking openly about where we fall short is not a sign of weakness, it is a sign of confidence in the system we helped build. If we ask others to uphold human rights, we must be willing to hold ourselves to the same standard. Human rights are in Belgium’s DNA. The universality, indivisibility and interdependence of human rights are the guiding principles of everything we do, at home and on the international stage. This review, based on the follow-up of 251 recommendations accepted in 2021, is how we turn that commitment into accountability. In a world where the very concept of universal rights is under pressure, exercises like the UPR matter more than ever. @BelgiumMFA @BelgiumUNGeneva

🇱🇧🇮🇱 I welcome the announcement of a ten-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon. It must now be confirmed on the ground. This is an important first step after weeks of devastating violence. Israel and Lebanon need a lasting solution. This requires the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, the disarmament of Hezbollah, full respect for Lebanon’s territorial sovereignty, and strong support for the Lebanese government to ensure the state’s monopoly on arms. Belgium has been engaged from day one. We remain fully mobilised to support Israel and Lebanon on the path towards a sustained ceasefire and lasting peace. België is sinds dag één betrokken. We blijven volledig gemobiliseerd om Israël en Libanon te ondersteunen op weg naar een duurzaam staakt-het-vuren en blijvende vrede. @BelgiumMFA
