For more than five years now, Gattahalli Road has been left in a dire state, with no significant repairs or improvements undertaken. Despite numerous requests and complaints from frustrated residents, the responsibility to address this issue keeps shifting from one authority to another. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), which should ideally handle urban infrastructure, points fingers at the local Panchayat, claiming the area falls under their jurisdiction. In turn, the Panchayat shifts the burden to the local Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), citing a lack of resources and authority to carry out the necessary repairs. When approached, the MLA insists that the responsibility lies with the state government, which, according to him, has not allocated the required funds to address the problem.
This endless loop of passing the buck leaves citizens without solutions, stranded between various government bodies unwilling to take ownership. It’s particularly concerning when we consider the fact that Karnataka, and especially Bangalore, contributes significantly to India’s economy, generating about 11.9% of the nation’s direct taxes. Many of the taxpayers who contribute to this revenue traverse these damaged roads daily, enduring the hardships and risks that come with poor infrastructure.
Such a situation not only causes frustration but also raises important questions about accountability. Are the contributions of citizens being utilized effectively? Why should residents continue to bear the burden of unsafe, poorly maintained roads while contributing significantly to the nation's coffers? The constant delay in action highlights a gap in governance, where citizens feel abandoned by the very authorities elected to serve them. It underscores the need for a more accountable, responsive approach to public infrastructure, one that truly reflects the spirit of "Brand Bengaluru" as a city that values its residents and prioritizes their safety and quality of life.
