Today, 70–90% of software incorporates
#OpenSource components. From
#AI and
#IoT to
#cloud infrastructure and e-Government tools, it forms the backbone of nearly all digital systems. Yet, as underlined by the Elcano Royal Institute, this crucial layer often lacks the governance, funding, and visibility needed to match Europe’s values, standards, and strategic autonomy.
🧩 The question is clear: how can Europe move beyond being a user, and establish itself as a global leader in open source governance and standardisation?
These themes will drive the discussions at Open Source Community Day 2025, on 23–24 September in Madrid, co-organised by the Eclipse Foundation and
#CEISphere.
Over two days, the event will bring together developers, policymakers, researchers, and industry leaders to explore how open source can strengthen Europe’s digital infrastructure, making it more secure, transparent, and community-driven.
📣 Highlights include:
✅ Keynotes, panels, and a dynamic poster exhibition
✅ Networking with EU-funded projects and active OSS communities
✅ Opportunities to present tools, projects, and outcomes
✅ Lively debates on open source as a force for sovereignty, resilience, and innovation
🗣 Confirmed speakers include experts from CODECO Project, OpenAgri,
#EclipseDataspace, SEDIMARK, CEI-Sphere, and more.
As the Elcano analysis notes:
"Open source represents a major concentration of risk, often underestimated when discussing digital sovereignty and security [...] Europe should shape open source governance to align with its long-term security and economic interests."
