The Mother of All Ribosome Collisions
Life before #ubiquitin: B. subtilis MutS2/RqcU senses translational stalls that lead to #ribosome collisions, then elicits degradation of the incomplete nascent-chains. Excited to share our findings, online @Nature today.
#RQC
A team of researchers led by ZMBH's PIs C. Joazeiro @LabJoazeiro and S. Pfeffer @PfefferCryoLab discovered how the bacterial MutS2 protein prevents damage by stalled ribosomes! Further details in Nature nature.com/articles/s41586-0…
A Tenure Track Professorship at the ZMBH in Heidelberg, Germany, has just been advertised, (18 January 2026 deadline)

I encourage excellent candidates in the broad #proteostasis and/or translation fields to apply! @scijobs@sciencejobs_eu
Thrilled and honored to receive the #ERCAdG! This will fund us for the next 5 yrs for groundbreaking research
My project SuTra focuses on the Surveillance of Translation, from sensing #ribosome stalling to #RQC. We aim to learn how defective surveillance causes neurodegeneration

Impressive #EMBOubiquitin24 in #Cavtat with more than 300 participants & active discussions at posters. Superb success- thx to the organisers @MerblYifat76992, @YKulathu, @LabJoazeiro, @polosimona1, @EMBOevents 🙌👏🫶👍
The hotel and weather matched the quality of science 😊
Grateful to connect and learn from the great minds in ubiquitin, proteostasis and organelle quality control! Such a well-organised event! #EMBOubiquitin2024
Federico followed up on our discovery that bacteria also have an RQC pathway. In collab w @PfefferCryoLab, he elucidated mechanisms underlying Ala-tailing by RqcH (the homolog of Rqc2/NEMF), and discovered a factor that senses collided ribosomes upstream of RQC (hence, RqcU).
Excited to announce our upcoming free virtual Networking events on 16th of July, 2024 with special guests joining for a fireside chat! This is a great opportunity to hear from and interact with trailblazers in the field and then network in smaller groups. Links below to sign-up
Bacteria can counter noncanonical lipid ubiquitination with a #ubiquitin esterase! Fantastic collaboration with @ThurstonLab and @CMBI_Szczesna, with @r_lacoursiere driving our side of the project using some amazing tools built by the Geurink lab.

A fantastic team effort, thanks to Jonas Duering Madita Wolter, and our spectacular collaborators. Massive thanks to all the people involved in this work!
What can bacteria teach us about #ubiquitin? A lot!
In our latest preprint, @tylergfranklin set out to understand how secreted bacterial ligases catalyze ubiquitin modifications during infection. What he found will surprise you!

With a fixed typo, I re-invite you to come chat Ub & Targeted Protein Degradation with our welcoming community at the @FASEBorg#UBPSRC where full days of exciting science with joyful interactions will be capped by nightly fireworks over the natural wonder of Niagara Falls.
We're excited with our line up of speakers for the FASEB #Ubiquitin meeting in June 2024! Join us in Niagara Falls to hear stories ranging from ubiquitin signaling and mechanisms to #RQC and targeted protein degradation (#TPD#protacs#molecularglues)
Please join us this summer as the power of Ubiquitin Signaling converges with the power of Niagara Falls for @FASEBorg#UBPSRC. We value DEIA, are raising $ for travel awards, have fantastic speakers and are excited to select new speakers from abstracts. @LabJoazeiro
New work from the lab @NatureAging! 🌱🌱 We asked whether the ability of plants to suppress pathological protein aggregation can be applied into human cell and animal models to delay or even prevent neurodegenerative diseases
