The AN-32, Indian Air Force's tactical transport fleet, was inducted in the early 1980s. Many aircraft in service today are over 40 years old. India procured around 118-125 AN-32s, and nearly 20 have reportedly been lost in crashes over the decades. Major tragedies include the 2016 Bay of Bengal crash that killed 29 personnel and the 2019 Arunachal Pradesh crash that claimed 13 lives. Every crash raises a serious question, Why are our pilots and aircrew still being asked to fly aircraft designed during the Soviet era? Our brave air warriors deserve the safest and most modern platforms available.
