Political prisoners in Canada update ๐Ÿ‘‡ from Gord Magill arrested in 2022 in Alberta at the Coutts border during the truckers protest. Their arrests and charges were used to justify the invoking of the emergencies act(basically martial law in Canada) which has since been ruled by the courts as unjustified and illegal, yet this persecution continues while murderers and violent criminals are given house arrests.
It was a busy week in The Maple Gulag with ongoing persecutions of Tamara Lich Chris Barber in Ottawa, but this graffiti reminds us that Tony Olienick, the last of The Coutts Four, remains a Political Prisoner, which should make every Canadian ashamed to be one. A thread ๐Ÿงต 1/

VPN companies will leave Canada. The government will force companies to retain your data for one year. The legal threshold for police access to your data will be lowered. Meanwhile, the federal government is cancelling all debate on Bill C-22, the Lawful Access Act, in order to pass this legislation before Parliament adjourns on Friday, June 19. Now, more than ever before, Canadians who care about privacy must urge their Members of Parliament to defeat Bill C-22. This is a critical moment in our history: will Canada be a free nation or a surveillance state? Canadians have defeated "lawful access" legislation before, and we must do so again. Contact your MP today: ourcommons.ca/Members/en/seaโ€ฆ

๐ŸšจThe government is moving to shut down lawful access hearings and consideration of amendments on mandatory metadata retention, security backdoors, and weakened encryption today. All amendments to Bill C-22 would be kept secret and voted on without debate. michaelgeist.ca/2026/06/goveโ€ฆ

In Canada, Bill C-22 will give our government back door access into all our devices and requires carriers to store user data for up to "a year." Sam Cooper tells us why the Carney Liberal surveillance legislation is bad for everyoneโ€”tech companies, Liberals and Canadians. Full episode premieres everywhere tomorrow, June 17th.

OUTRAGEOUS!!! Mark Carney is ramming through unprecedented new government surveillance powers!!! Shutting down all debate and preventing any future witnesses from criticizing this Bill. Mark Carney is showing every day that he is just another Liberal.
๐Ÿšจ BREAKING๐Ÿšจ The Liberals are trying to ram C-22 through the House of Commons before summer. This is why Carney bribed the opposition MPs to cross the floor. This is what they wanted but couldnโ€™t get without a majority: secrecy, authoritarianism, and the right to spy on Canadians. Thanks @CdEntremontMP @jeneroux @MarilynGladuSL you quislings.
Public Safety Minister @gary_srp committed to amendments to Bill C-22 in light of concerns about security risks, encryption and metadata retention. Instead, the government is shutting down the hearing with no further debate on changes to lawful access. michaelgeist.ca/2026/06/goveโ€ฆ

๐ŸšจBREAKING NEWS: the Orwellian Surveillance state is officially coming to Canada. The Carney government just filed a motion to ram Bill C-22, the mass Canadian spy bill, through Parliament by the end of this week. Hereโ€™s their play: โœ… Amendments kept SECRET from the public before the vote โœ… Zero discussion on any remaining amendments โœ… Weeks of expert testimony from the Privacy Commissioner, lawyers, security companies, discarded โœ… Only 30 minutes of committee debate They want all the big tech companies to be forced into metadata retention, encryption backdoors, warrantless data sharing. Not to mention that they introduced Bill C-36, which strips the Privacy Commissionerโ€™s role in private sector privacy regulation. The privacy regulator gutted on Monday. The surveillance bill rammed through on Tuesday. The amendments hidden from Canadians on Wednesday. Spying on us by next week? So this is what Carney means when he said doing things โ€œat speeds not seen in generations?โ€

The liberal manuf. majority govt will fail again like when Meta blocked all news from their sites due to badly written legislation. Theyโ€™re rushing again after warnings from Apple, Meta, Signal, shoplift CEO, Windscribe, law prof. Michael Geist, privacy commissioner.
You've likely seen the headlines from bills C-34, C-36, and C-22 in the media. Each may sound reasonable on their own: protect kids online, modernize privacy, help police catch criminals. But buried within is an emerging Digital Regulatory Superpower unlike anything Canadians have ever seen. These bills hand one unelected commission power over what Canadians can say, what stays private, and who the state can watch. As of today, the Federal Government is rushing to enact massive Internet Surveillance Reform into law without proper debate.

The same five Cabinet-appointed members will run all of it via the Digital Safety and Data Protection Commission. They will write the rules, investigate, hold the hearings, and judge cases of over online speech AND the private data of every Canadian. Unprecedented power.

You have to read Bill C-34 on The Commission to believe it. It sets the rules on age verification, social media bans, and content removals while serving as combined regulator, investigator and advocate. At the start, Chair alone can be the full Commission. x.com/mgeist/status/20665288โ€ฆ

Before moving onto Keir Starmerโ€™s UK clampdown on social media: โ€œThousands of people are getting arrested every year in the United Kingdom for social media posts.
