Thank you to @Apple for recognizing @SpeechifyAI today at App of the Day!!! From Apple: "Speechify is an effortless human-sounding AI reading assistant that can help you learn more in less time." "What we love: The many different ways to use this powerful productivity and accessibility tool. Snap a photo of your textbook to listen while you commute. Turn blog posts into audio. Plow through work emails (which are much more digestible and entertaining in the voice of Snoop Dogg or Gwyneth Paltrow)."

A few weeks ago I sat down to answer what sounded like a simple question: which text-to-speech model should we actually use? I figured I'd check a leaderboard, pick the top one, and move on. That's not how it went. By the time I'd worked through 19 models, the "winner" had changed twice. Cartesia's Sonic 3.5 took the number one spot on May 22. Nine days later, Google's Gemini 3.1 Flash TTS had taken it back. The ground was moving while I was standing on it. So I stopped hunting for the best model and started asking a better question: best at what? Once I framed it that way, the picture got clear. If you're building a live voice agent, latency is everything, and Sonic 3.5 answers in about 82 milliseconds. If you're producing long narration, Gemini gives you 200 audio tags and real control, but it can't stream and caps at 32k tokens, so it's built for reading, not conversation. If you want to self-host, Fish Audio S2 Pro is the strongest open-weight model out there, right up until you read the license and realize commercial use costs extra. And if budget is the constraint, Kokoro runs on a CPU for around 65 cents per million characters. None of them is "the best." Each one wins a specific brief. That's the part the leaderboards leave out. A number one ranking answers a question most teams aren't actually asking. The real work is naming the one thing you can't compromise on, then testing two models on your own text. I wrote up all 19, with the trade-offs, pricing, and licensing, in one place. Here is our take: marktechpost.com/2026/05/30/… @inworld_ai @cartesia @OpenAI @GoogleDeepMind @Microsoft @xai @MistralDevs @MistralAI @ElevenLabs @DeepgramAI @hume_ai @SpeechifyAI @Alibaba_Qwen @MiniMax_AI

"Listening instead of reading is lazy." Choosing to learn in a way that works for your brain is NOT lazy. Absorbing information 2-3x faster by listening is NOT. lazy Finally finishing the books you bought is NOT lazy. Remember, learning differently doesn't mean learning less.

The other day I asked a longtime family friend what he uses to stay on top of his work. He had no idea I’d just joined the team at Speechify. “I’ve been using Speechify since before college,” he told me (he graduated in 2021). “A lot of my teachers didn’t support how I learn. Being able to scan assignments and listen to them was one of the only things that helped me keep up, and actually understand the material.” Seeing Speechify “in the wild” like that hit different. Accessibility isn’t a feature. It’s the difference between getting by and truly learning. Proud to be apart of something that meets people where they are.

The @SpeechifyAI podcast feature is ridiculously cool. It can turn any book into a full podcast with two AI hosts actually discussing it. Feels like listening to a real conversation, not just narration. Reading just became optional.

A couple weeks ago, a friend of mine woke up and couldn’t see clearly. No warning. No explanation. After hours in the ER, she got the news: Multiple Sclerosis. Everything changed overnight. She’s a founder. Her entire job is reading, writing, staying on top of everything. And suddenly, the thing she relied on most… became the hardest thing to do. She told me she felt helpless. I said, “Just try this—use Speechify to read your emails, messages, everything. Let it take some of the load.” A couple weeks later, she called me. She said it changed her life. She’s back to running her team, keeping up with work, feeling like herself again. Technology doesn’t fix everything. But sometimes, it gives people a way to keep going when everything else gets harder.
