From @guardian, our CEO's response to news that 74% fewer people in prison took a rehabilitative course in 2023 than in 2010. Charities like ours fill gaps left by government. We hope for a sensible debate on our justice system & an end to the crisis in our prisons. @StandOutPP

What happens when you encourage people in prison to connect with people in the community? From building confidence to systems change, we spoke about what it means to volunteer in prison as we celebrated @PA_Consulting reaching 100 StandOut volunteers. standout.org.uk/blog/connect…

Last year @DuniaShafik joined us for a week-long placement as part of @cjalliance ELEVATE CJS lived experience leadership programme It was great to have Dunia as part of the team, to learn from her & listen as she told her story as powerfully & generously as she does in her blog
When Dunia's son was drawn into a cycle of crime, life turned upside down in a matter of days. In this blog, she shares her profound grief, systemic failures, and how heartbreak led her to found A Life of Choices, helping at-risk youth and men in prison. criminaljusticealliance.org/…

Hoping for a London transfer @JacobFreeeman! Congratulations for this &your tireless work to show the power of #restorativejustice Your story is one I used for many years as a Sycamore Tree Tutor in prison: it’s a story that totally deserves the wider telling it is now getting👏🏻
Another great article about the power of restorative justice and why everyone should see Punch @mrJamesGraham @JacobFreeeman thetimes.co.uk/article/2480a…

“I believe everyone is redeemable, if you approach their difficulties in the right light &treat them as worthy of trust” - a brilliant segue from a personal story of broken trust by @TommyShakes on @BBCr4 A Point of View. Thank you for your exposition of the challenges & 1/3

& your reflections of all that has gone wrong in our prisons, & society’s attitudes to people in prison, but also for your rational exploration of what we want &need from our justice system. It is refreshing to hear a voice with no axe to grind over what works &why we should2/3

all be concerned by the state of our prisons and the shocking levels of remand. Tom goes on to say “Prison brutalises too many rather than reforming people”. It also means that the work that the 3rd sector does bringing hope & person centred care is critically important. 3/3

@neill_bob again standing up to talk about #jointenterprise & the need to clarify the law so innocent people do not suffer #injustice There should be no argument. It’s better 10 guilty men go free than 1 innocent man be wrongly convicted. @JENGbA @sounddelivery @Channel4News

This has been an important aim for a while. If you work in the justice space want to understand more about the impact of trauma and how you might respond in your work for the benefit of the people you support and yourself and your teams then we recommend @TheNelsonTrust
14 May 2024
Last week @TheNelsonTrust helped us reflect on what it means to be trauma informed in our work with people leaving prison. We came away encouraged that - while there's always room to grow - our commitment to relational working means we’re absolutely on the right path.

Why do HMPPS need to be ‘urgently notified’ about a prison that people have been telling them is in crisis for months? If they can now develop a plan within ‘28 days’ to fix it, why not before? If Katie Price was the problem why have they not already moved or supported her?

I’m proud to be handing over as Chair of the Employment Advisory Board network to Rosie Brown. When I started 4 years ago to help prison leavers find work, only 14% had a job after six months of release. We are now at over 30%, and 92 prisons have an EAB in place!

Another insightful, honest blog from @LandWorksHQ on the value of long term support getting to the root of the problem. sShort term thinking plagues so many areas of life. @StandOut_HQ we know what Chris says is true - we have a choice -currently our #cjs chooses to waste £.

We started this week on a real high, discussing a series of poems with men at HMP Pentonville - on the theme of resilience. This line - from Invictus, by William Ernest Henley - resonated with us all.

🆕 Can people in prison make choices? Our participants at HMP Pentonville recently discussed just that. 👇 Amy shares the highlights of the session, which centred on the idea that our seemingly insignificant daily choices lead us to success or failure. standout.org.uk/blog/the-sli…
