A 2025 Nature study shows Instagram Reels algorithmic curation = measurable anxiety increase via upward social comparison. What's happening in your brain: - Hyper-curated Reels appear in your feed (algorithm chose them) - You compare yourself upward to that idealized lifestyle - Dopamine response → keeps you scrolling - Algorithm learns: *This content engages people* - More comparison triggers appear - Anxiety increases The system works, just not for your wellbeing. The Science: - Instagram Reels engagement = 0.007 points higher on anxiety scale (p <.001). Statistically small. Psychologically massive at scale. - 2,285 adults across Oman; consistent cross-cultural findings - Algorithmic feed introduction (2016) = measurable mental health decline in teenagers (quasi-experimental design) - Upward comparison moderates this: People who compare themselves more are MORE anxious The Uncomfortable Truth: This isn't a user behaviour problem. It's an algorithmic design problem. The platform isn't neutral—it's actively amplifying comparison triggers. So What? This doesn't mean delete Instagram. The algorithm problem isn’t unsolvable. The Nature study also show interventions: - Recognizing the mechanism = You're not weak for feeling anxious. Your brain is responding as designed. - Design can change = We can build platforms that don't weaponize comparison. - Intentionality matters = Even knowing the mechanism helps you regain agency. As founders building connection platforms, we need to ask ourselves are we connecting people, or are we making them compare themselves into anxiety? The algorithm knows the difference.
