ALT Clerk: “We did a lot so far as the day's work was concerned. If we could have the children boarded out it would be a good idea. Another problem they had to consider was the question of unmarried mothers.” Chairman: “The worst of it is that when unmarried mothers come in here they remain here for the rest of their lives and come [sic] of them become mothers in here without going out at all (laughter)” Clerk: “That sort of thing occurs in the best regulated families (renewed laughter).” Chairman: “But somehow it speaks bad for the union (workhouse), or rather for the union system.” A resolution was passed in accordance with the Chairman's suggestion.
