The Department of Basic Education (DBE), through the Directorate: Curriculum Implementation and Quality Improvement (GET), is currently hosting a five-day Literacy and Numeracy Workshop taking place from 16–20 February 2026 in Nelspruit. The workshop brings together Early Grade Youth Assistants (EGYAs) and Foundation Phase Subject Advisors from across Mpumalanga as part of the Systemic Improvement of Languages and Numeracy (SILN) Project. The SILN Project, which is being piloted in the Ehlanzeni and Nkangala districts, seeks to strengthen literacy and numeracy outcomes in the Foundation Phase. Over a three-year period, the initiative aims to enhance pedagogical practices and build educator capacity in the teaching of Mathematics, Home Language (HL), and First Additional Language (FAL) for Grades 1–3.
