The critical illness episode (patient) and intensive care unit (ICU) experience (family and health care team) are inciting events that propagate a cascade of longer-term, multidimensional physical and mental health consequences that may result in durable disability, compromised health-related quality of life, job disruption or loss, and increased health care utilization and cost over time.
