On todays learning Igbo, Let's talk about Homographs and Homonyms in Asụsụ Igbo. 🌀 Asụsụ Igbo is full of words that look or sound alike but mean completely different things. Understanding these differences helps us read, write, and speak more clearly. Some words share the same spelling but differ in pronunciation and meaning - these are called Homographs. Others share the same spelling and pronunciation but carry different meanings depending on context - these are called Homonyms. 📌Homographs Same Spelling: They look the same when written. Different Pronunciations: They may sound different. Different Meanings: Their meanings differ depending on the context. E.g We know the popular • Àkwà - Bed • Ákwà - Clothe • Ákwá - Cry • Àkwá - Egg . • Óké - Male • Òkè - Share • Òké - Rat • Ókè - Perimeter/ Boundary . • Égbé - Hawk • Égbè - Gun . • Ányá - Eye • Ányà - Driving 📌Homonyms Same Spelling: They look the same when written. Same Pronunciation: They sound the same when spoken. Different Meanings: Their meanings differ depending on the context. • Ọ́nwá - Moon • Ọ́nwá - Month . • Ílú - Proverbs • Ílú - Bitter . • Àgwà - Beans • Àgwà - Behaviour • Àgwà - Color For native speakers (L1 learners), these differences come naturally - they know when mma means beauty and when it means knife without even thinking. But for second-language learners (L2 learners), it can be a real challenge. Learning this is very important for anyone studying Asụsụ Igbo, because meaning in Igbo depends so much on tone and context. The same word can bless or bash, depending on how it is said. (Tàá – chew, Tāā! – Shut up). Context isn’t just important in speaking Igbo - it is everything.
