Eclipse prediction in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) is a solved problem. In cislunar space, it's a different discipline entirely and getting it wrong can end a mission. The IBEX spacecraft operated in a highly elliptical, chaotic orbit with a period near the 3:1 lunar resonance. The orbital evolution was sensitive to gravitational perturbations from the Moon and Sun, making long-term prediction fundamentally difficult. IBEX carried a fixed battery capacity which meant that a sufficiently long eclipse was a mission-ending threat. The SEE approach: annually regenerate a rolling 10-year eclipse prediction. The initial period of the orbit was fine-tuned in 2011 specifically to suppress long eclipse events over the coming decade. Each subsequent year, a fresh 10-year propagation was run, incorporating updated orbit determination solutions, to catch any emerging eclipse threats far enough in advance to plan mitigation. The challenge is that "far enough in advance" is years, not weeks because orbital adjustment opportunities are rare and ΔV-constrained. One long eclipse event did fall outside the initial 10-year prediction window. IBEX survived it, but the lesson was clear. A chaotic, high-apogee orbit, eclipse prediction is not a launch-and-forget analysis. It is a continuous operational discipline. When we were on the TESS team, we applied a similar framework.
