#PRESIDENTBIO COMMISSIONS SEWA GROUNDS MARKET
His Excellency, President Rtd. Brigadier Julius Maada Bio, yesterday, yesterday Thursday 18th September 2025, officially commissioned the Sewa Grounds Market in Freetown. This landmark project designed to support traders, artisans, and small businesses in Sierra Leone’s informal sector.
The market, constructed under the leadership of the National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT) and its Director General, Mr. Mohamed Fuaad Daboh, marks the successful completion of a project that had been stalled for several years.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Bio commended NASSIT’s Board of Trustees, management, and staff for their resilience, describing the facility as a major investment in Sierra Leone’s socio-economic infrastructure and a key driver of his government’s “Big Five” development agenda.
The President emphasized the importance of the informal sector in fueling economic growth and announced a new pension scheme for traders, bike riders, and other workers, to be managed by NASSIT. This scheme, he explained, will guarantee income security in cases of accident, invalidity, or retirement. He further revealed that rental rates at the market had been reduced from NLe 12,000 to NLe 6,000, making the facility more affordable and accessible to traders.
