Two federal inspectors general — from USAID and the Department of Health & Human Services — are investigating whether EcoHealth Alliance — a “nonprofit” group involved in high-risk coronavirus research in China — double-billed US taxpayers for hundreds of thousands of dollars for that work.
The probe of EcoHealth Alliance’s practices, some details of which haven’t been reported, is at an advanced stage and has included subpoenas of the organization’s records.
The investigation by the inspectors general, which is civil rather than criminal, seeks to determine whether taxpayers paid twice for equipment, travel, salaries and supplies associated with the coronavirus research in China, including at the WIV.
