Recently, the
@IITKgp, with the support of its Department of Mining Engineering, successfully conducted a specialised training programme titled “Safety, Health and Environment Management System in Mining Industry” for newly recruited Deputy Directors of Mines Safety from the Directorate General of Mines Safety. Organised under a strategic Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions, the programme brought together officers representing DGMS zones across the country, reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening safety oversight in India’s mining sector.
The initiative was undertaken under the leadership of Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Director IIT Kharagpur, whose vision has encouraged meaningful collaborations between the institute and national regulatory bodies. The programme was inaugurated in the presence of Prof Gargi Das, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (FoE&A), while Prof Biswajit Samanta welcomed the participants and emphasised the department’s commitment to advancing mining safety through academic engagement. Programme coordinator Prof. B. B. Mandal highlighted the importance of sustained collaboration between academia and regulatory authorities in promoting occupational health and safety in the mining industry.
The training programme offered a comprehensive blend of theoretical insights and practical learning across critical domains, including safety engineering, risk analysis, safety data analytics, geomechanics for mines, ergonomics, and Safety Management Plan development. Distinguished faculty members and invited experts, such as Prof Ashish Bhattacharjee and Prof Ashim Kumar Sinha, contributed to the curriculum, guiding participants through advanced topics including root-cause analysis, rock mechanics, occupational health challenges (including silicosis and noise-induced hearing loss), and data-driven approaches to risk assessment and mine environment management.
In a special address, Prof Debasis Deb reflected on the growing importance of academic–regulatory partnerships in addressing emerging challenges in mining safety, particularly in the context of automation and artificial intelligence. The programme concluded with a valedictory session graced by Prof M. K. Sahoo, whose remarks underscored the importance of integrating cutting-edge research with field-level regulatory practice. The presence of Prof B. S. Sastry further highlighted the collaborative academic ecosystem supporting such initiatives.
By bringing together regulatory expertise and advanced engineering knowledge, the programme exemplifies the continued efforts of IIT Kharagpur and DGMS to build capacity, enhance safety governance, and promote a more resilient and sustainable mining industry in India.
