No Connections, No Degree, Just Tech: The Story of a Self-Taught Engineer
Dayo never liked school. Not because he wasn’t smart, but because it never seemed to like him back. Teachers barely noticed him, assignments felt pointless, and exams? Let’s not even talk about those. By the time he scraped through secondary school, university wasn’t even an option. His parents couldn’t afford it, and honestly, he didn’t care.
But reality didn’t care about his feelings either. Job applications went unanswered. Employers wanted degrees, experience, things he didn’t have. He jumped from one odd job to another, barely making enough to survive in Lagos.
One night, while scrolling through Twitter on borrowed data, he saw a tweet: "Tech doesn’t care about your degree. Just your skills."
Something clicked. He had heard about people making money from tech, but was it really possible? He had nothing to lose, so he started.
His first stop? YouTube. Then free coding platforms. HTML, CSS, JavaScript, he struggled, got frustrated, almost quit. But something kept him going. Maybe it was the thought of never having to beg for a job again.
Months later, he built his first project. It was terrible. The second? Slightly better. He started freelancing for peanuts, just to practice. One client turned into five. Then ten. Then an unexpected email, a remote job paying $2,500 a month.
Dayo sat staring at his screen, blinking. Was this real? It was.
He didn’t need a connection. He didn’t need a degree. Just a laptop, determination, and Wi-Fi.
You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to start. The tech world is wide open, and it doesn’t care about your background.
