FWIW, I tried at the Seattle store and I got a receipt within 90 seconds of leaving the store. Anecdote with a sample size of 1 though.

We also have the fact that Amazon, one of the world’s most technologically sophisticated companies in the world ended up using humans instead of AI.

I went to an Amazon Fresh with Just Walk Out in Kensington dozens of times and got a correct receipt within a minute every time, including the first few times when I deliberately tried to trick it by putting things back in the wrong places, mixing similar weight/shape things etc

My guess is you saw a demo with a smaller number of objects and that in scaling to a full grocery store Amazon had to deal with a lot of real-world edge cases that neither deep learning nor classical computer vision handles well.
Hence the need for human verification.

I remember hearing about this. Fake AI is using human Mechanical Turks. That’s why Just Walk Out never managed to get receipts to customers without hours of delays.

Amazon phasing out its checkout-less grocery store (Just Walk Out) technology is fascinating. This announcement has one critical detail some might miss: According to the article, 1000 workers in India were watching and labeling videos to ensure the checkout-less system didn't miss anything.
This boils down to a massive discourse we're seeing today around deploying AI: structured vs. unstructured data.
Amazon deployed a massive workforce to solve the problem and added manual labeling in real-time, but how will this play out with other types of data across sales, marketing, manufacturing, robotics, operations, and more?
Companies with structured, clearly labeled data will be set up for success in the next 12-18 months as they develop/launch AI solutions.
