๐จ 6 Major Flaws in
@Google Lighthouse ๐จ
๐ Everyone uses
@Google Lighthouse, right? It generates comprehensive reports, which give you actionable, user-centric metrics, and they are really easy to run and analyze. So why not?
Well, using Lighthouse reports as your only or ultimate performance measure has several serious flaws. But the biggest one? When a measure becomes the goal, it ceases to be a good measure of anything.
So keep these limitations in mind when using Google Lighthouse as a performance benchmark:
๐ฅ๏ธ Client-Side Bias: Lighthouse ignores server-side performance metrics, leading to a skewed measure of overall site performance.
๐ Synthetic Testing Flaws: Lighthouse tries to predict the user's experience. But we all know user's aren't that predictable. The absence of real user monitoring means that LH assessments operate in a vacuum, devoid of context like network conditions, user devices, and browsers.
๐ข Score Obsession: Chasing high Lighthouse scores can lead to overlooking user-centric or functional website aspects.
๐ Inconsistency: The variability in Lighthouse results can lead to misguided optimization efforts, and can lead to a false sense of objectivity.
๐ Outdated Mobile: Lighthouseโs โmobileโ audit setting simulates horrible 3G cell service, when most of the world has switched to LTE or 5G. Of course 3G โmobileโ scores are bad! But are they relevant?
๐ค Tech Over User: Lighthouseโs technical focus ignores crucial UX elements, compromising user satisfaction. Laws of UX > Performance every day of the week.

๐ง One-Size-Fits-None: Lighthouse's generic recommendations can never suit all websites' unique contexts and needs.
๐ False Sense of Achievement: High Lighthouse scores can give a misleading sense of site optimization, ignoring non-measured or non-measurable (but still important) aspects.
So do I beat myself up about having performance scores of < 100 in all categories? Not really. What I try to do instead is continually optimize website landing page copy to make sure Iโm speaking to both clients and developer in the right way.
