🌧️ Indian Monsoon: Key Factors (UPSC GS-I Geography) The Southwest Monsoon is driven by a combination of land-sea temperature differences, atmospheric circulation, and oceanic conditions. 1️⃣ Differential Heating of Land and Sea During summer, the Indian landmass heats up faster than surrounding oceans. Creates a low-pressure area over northwest India and a high-pressure area over the Indian Ocean. Moist winds move from sea to land, bringing rainfall. 2️⃣ Shift of the ITCZ (Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone) The ITCZ shifts northward during summer. It reaches the Gangetic Plain, creating a monsoon trough. This attracts moisture-laden winds towards India. 3️⃣ Tibetan Plateau Heating The Tibetan Plateau becomes intensely hot in summer. Acts as an elevated heat source. Strengthens the low-pressure system and monsoon circulation. 4️⃣ Mascarene High A high-pressure cell develops near the Mascarene Islands in the southern Indian Ocean. Generates strong cross-equatorial winds towards India. 5️⃣ Cross-Equatorial Winds & Coriolis Force Southeast Trade Winds from the Southern Hemisphere travel northward and cross the equator. Upon entering the Northern Hemisphere, the Coriolis force deflects these winds to their right. This rightward deflection transforms them into the moisture-laden Southwest Monsoon Winds that bring rainfall to India. 6️⃣ Jet Streams The Subtropical Westerly Jet (STWJ) must completely withdraw and shift north of the Himalayas to allow the monsoon to set in. Simultaneously, the Tropical Easterly Jet (TEJ) develops over peninsular India. The sudden onset or "burst" of the monsoon is dynamically associated with these jet stream transitions. 7️⃣ ENSO (El Niño–Southern Oscillation) El Niño → Weak monsoon, below-normal rainfall. La Niña → Strong monsoon, above-normal rainfall. 8️⃣ Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) Positive IOD often enhances monsoon rainfall. Negative IOD may weaken monsoon performance. 9️⃣ Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) Eastward-moving tropical weather system. Influences active and break phases of monsoon. 🔟 Himalayan Barrier Prevents monsoon winds from escaping northward.
