๐ŸŒง๏ธ Indian Monsoon: Key Factors (UPSC GS-I Geography) The Southwest Monsoon is driven by a combination of land-sea temperature differences, atmospheric circulation, and oceanic conditions. 1๏ธโƒฃ Differential Heating of Land and Sea During summer, the Indian landmass heats up faster than surrounding oceans. Creates a low-pressure area over northwest India and a high-pressure area over the Indian Ocean. Moist winds move from sea to land, bringing rainfall. 2๏ธโƒฃ Shift of the ITCZ (Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone) The ITCZ shifts northward during summer. It reaches the Gangetic Plain, creating a monsoon trough. This attracts moisture-laden winds towards India. 3๏ธโƒฃ Tibetan Plateau Heating The Tibetan Plateau becomes intensely hot in summer. Acts as an elevated heat source. Strengthens the low-pressure system and monsoon circulation. 4๏ธโƒฃ Mascarene High A high-pressure cell develops near the Mascarene Islands in the southern Indian Ocean. Generates strong cross-equatorial winds towards India. 5๏ธโƒฃ Cross-Equatorial Winds & Coriolis Force Southeast Trade Winds from the Southern Hemisphere travel northward and cross the equator. Upon entering the Northern Hemisphere, the Coriolis force deflects these winds to their right. This rightward deflection transforms them into the moisture-laden Southwest Monsoon Winds that bring rainfall to India. 6๏ธโƒฃ Jet Streams The Subtropical Westerly Jet (STWJ) must completely withdraw and shift north of the Himalayas to allow the monsoon to set in. Simultaneously, the Tropical Easterly Jet (TEJ) develops over peninsular India. The sudden onset or "burst" of the monsoon is dynamically associated with these jet stream transitions. 7๏ธโƒฃ ENSO (El Niรฑoโ€“Southern Oscillation) El Niรฑo โ†’ Weak monsoon, below-normal rainfall. La Niรฑa โ†’ Strong monsoon, above-normal rainfall. 8๏ธโƒฃ Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) Positive IOD often enhances monsoon rainfall. Negative IOD may weaken monsoon performance. 9๏ธโƒฃ Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) Eastward-moving tropical weather system. Influences active and break phases of monsoon. ๐Ÿ”Ÿ Himalayan Barrier Prevents monsoon winds from escaping northward. Forces uplift of moist air, causing heavy rainfall. ๐Ÿ“ UPSC Mains Value Addition Monsoon = Differential Heating ITCZ Shift Tibetan Plateau Mascarene High Jet Streams ENSO/IOD Himalayan Barrier #UPSC #Geography #IndianMonsoon #SouthwestMonsoon #Monsoon2026 #UPSCPreparation #UPSCNotes #GS1 #PhysicalGeography #ClimateOfIndia #IMD #Prelims2027 #Mains2026 #GeographyOptional #CurrentAffairs #UPSCAspirants ๐ŸŒง๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ

๐Ÿ”† Rare Dragonfly Resurfaces in Arunachal Pradesh ๐Ÿ“ Why in News? โœ… A rare dragonfly species, Gynacantha khasiaca (Long-tailed Duskhawker), has been rediscovered in Arunachal Pradeshโ€™s Changlang district after nearly 110 years. ๐Ÿ“ Key Highlights: โœ… The species was sighted in Namdapha National Park and Tiger Reserve and was last recorded in the Abor Hills in 1914. โœ… Dragonflies possess near-360ยฐ vision with compound eyes containing thousands of tiny lenses and photoreceptors. โœ… The rediscovery was confirmed through photographic evidence and published in the Journal of Threatened Taxa. โœ… Dragonflies and damselflies belong to the order Odonata and are important indicators of healthy freshwater ecosystems. โœ… India hosts around 504 species and 27 subspecies of dragonflies and damselflies, with Arunachal Pradesh alone having 110 species. ๐Ÿ“ Ecological Importance: โœ… Dragonflies act as both predators and prey in aquatic food webs, helping maintain ecosystem balance. โœ… Their presence indicates good freshwater quality and ecological health. โœ… Rediscovery highlights the biodiversity richness of the Eastern Himalayas and Northeast India. ๐Ÿ“ Challenges / Concerns: โœ… Habitat destruction and climate change threaten freshwater ecosystems and insect diversity. โœ… Limited long-term monitoring and taxonomic research on lesser-known insect species. โœ… Increasing developmental pressures in biodiversity hotspots like Arunachal Pradesh. ๐Ÿ“ Way Forward: โœ… Strengthen habitat conservation in ecologically sensitive zones such as Namdapha Tiger Reserve. โœ… Promote citizen-science initiatives and biodiversity documentation. โœ… Expand freshwater ecosystem monitoring and insect conservation programmes. โœ… Increase research funding for lesser-known and threatened taxa. ๐Ÿ“ Mains Question: Discuss the ecological significance of dragonflies as bioindicators. How can biodiversity conservation in the Northeast contribute to Indiaโ€™s environmental security? ๐Ÿ”† Will Increasing the Strength of the Supreme Court Solve Pendency? ๐Ÿ“ Why in News? โœ… Supreme Court judgesโ€™ sanctioned strength increased from 34 to 38 through the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Act, 2026. โœ… Aim is to facilitate speedy justice and reduce pendency. ๐Ÿ“ Current Scenario โœ… Pendency in Supreme Court stands at nearly 94,000 cases. โœ… Mere increase in judges may improve capacity but is not a standalone solution. ๐Ÿ“ Major Causes of Pendency โœ… Excessive Special Leave Petitions (SLPs) โ€ข SLPs under Article 136 form a significant share of the Courtโ€™s docket. โ€ข Intended as an extraordinary remedy but increasingly used as a routine appeal mechanism. โœ… Government as the Largest Litigant โ€ข Large number of disputes involving Union and State Governments reach the Supreme Court. โ€ข Lack of a consistent litigation policy increases case burden. โœ… Frivolous and Non-Meritorious Litigation โ€ข Weak filtering mechanisms allow many cases with limited constitutional significance to reach the Court. โœ… Limited Judicial Time โ€ข Lengthy oral arguments and routine appeals consume valuable court time. ๐Ÿ“ Why Increasing Judges Alone May Not Be Enough? โœ… More judges can increase disposal capacity. โš ๏ธ However: โ€ข May lead to more Division Benches and inconsistent rulings. โ€ข Larger number of coordinate benches can create doctrinal conflicts. โ€ข Structural problems causing pendency remain unaddressed. ๐Ÿ“ Suggested Reforms โœ… Strengthen filtering of frivolous litigation. โœ… Restrict Supreme Courtโ€™s docket to: โ€ข Constitutional questions โ€ข Matters of national importance โ€ข Significant questions of law โœ… Implement a robust National Litigation Policy. โœ… Increase reliance on: โ€ข Written submissions โ€ข Digital case management โ€ข Efficient case screening โœ… Constitute larger benches for authoritative settlement of conflicting legal positions. ๐Ÿ“ Gender Representation in Judiciary โœ… Additional judicial vacancies offer an opportunity to improve womenโ€™s representation in the Supreme Court. โœ… Greater transparency in judicial appointments can enhance diversity and public confidence. ๐Ÿ“ Way Forward โœ… Increase in sanctioned strength should be complemented by: โ€ข Judicial discipline โ€ข Better case management โ€ข Litigation reforms โ€ข Strong screening mechanisms โœ… Sustainable reduction in pendency requires institutional reforms, not merely an increase in the number of judges. #GS2 #polity #SupremeCourt #Judiciary #JudicialReforms #PendencyOfCases #Article136 #SLP #ConstitutionalLaw #Governance #RuleOfLaw #JudicialAccountability #NationalLitigationPolicy #CaseManagement #DigitalJustice #WomenInJudiciary #JudicialAppointments #IndianPolity #GS2 #PolityAndGovernance #UPSC2026 #UPSC2027 #UPSCMains2026 #UPSCPrelims2027 #UPSCNotes #CurrentAffairs #MainsEnrichment #PrelimsPointers #UPSCAspirants #JusticeDelivery #LegalReforms #ConstitutionOfIndia
