One year ago today, I received my @neuralink implant. Most anniversaries in my life these days revolve around ALS. Milestones I never asked for. Reminders of what this disease has taken. Today is different. Today is an anniversary of strength. An anniversary of courage. An anniversary of possibility. Over the past year, I’ve had the opportunity to help develop telepathic 10-finger typing, work on technology that could allow someone to control a wheelchair with their brain, and even help advance systems that allow a robotic arm to mimic physical movements through thought alone 🧠 As I reflect on this milestone, I can’t help but think about Nick. He was one of my biggest advocates and supporters. He believed in me, fought for me, and encouraged me every step of the way. I wish he were here to see what we’ve accomplished together, but I know he’s been with me through all of it. This past year hasn’t just changed my life. It has shown what’s possible for millions of people living with paralysis, ALS, spinal cord injuries, and other conditions that rob people of their independence. The technology is evolving faster than most people realize, and I truly believe we’re witnessing the start of something that will change countless lives forever. One year down. One player in Shanghai used a BCI to control a virtual chessboard, with every move transmitted instantly to Nanchang, where a small robot moved the pieces on a physical board. Meanwhile, the player in Nanchang used a brain-controlled exoskeleton glove to grasp and move real chess pieces, competing directly against the robotic counterpart. Throughout the game, every move was completed using neural signals alone. China’s approval of a commercial brain-computer interface implant is undeniably a major milestone — and perhaps a symbolic lead over Neuralink. But we should be careful before calling it a medical revolution. Capturing cortical signals is one thing. Reliably “translating” them into complex, stable, safe motor intention in real life is another. Today’s BCI decoding remains relatively basic, highly constrained, and dependent on training, patient selection, signal quality, long-term stability, and clinical context. Helping a paralyzed patient control a robotic glove or regain partial hand movement is extraordinary. But it is not yet the same as restoring natural mobility, autonomy, or full neurological function. This is a breakthrough — yes. A miracle cure — not yet. The real question is not who beats Neuralink first. The real question is: who can prove long-term safety, reproducibility, medical usefulness, and ethical control of neural data?
