📣 ⛈️ ANNOUNCEMENT AND STORM COMPARISON. 💻 The NAM 3Km Model is getting RETIRED August 31, 2026. 💻 It will be replaced by the RRFS Model, with has been in experimental mode. 💻 The HRRR will remain active for the time being. 👀 Here is the comparison of all Three for tonight at the same time: 9 PM Wed May 13 (there will be showers after 4 PM, but the main line will be at night) 👉There has been quite a stir in the weather community as NOAA works towards one unified model. I have shown the 3Km often here. It did well over the winter, especially with our sleet storm. But has been poor with overplaying convection and timing of storms. The 12Km has some love, but that will also be on the chopping block, along with SREF, HREF, and HiresW (ARW, NSSL, and FV3 CAMs). 💁🏻‍♂️ Here we see the NAM 3Km showing a line of rain with embedded thunderstorms breaking up across the mountains. The RRFS is a little faster/farther East. This follows the bias I have seen with arrival often a little sooner. The HRRR model is more robust with a blend of multiple lines of heavy rain into a more continuous blob of rain across Central Maryland for a few hours. Just wanted to show the contrast with this event while sharing the news. I have not been showing the RRFS much since it is in experimental mode. I will be sharing more of it now that it has been deemed ready for prime time. However, many in the weather community are vocally disagreeing.
