In Finnish Lapland, scientists discovered that Norway spruce trees growing above a gold deposit contained gold nanoparticles in their needles—and these particles were closely tied to bacteria living inside the needles. The bacteria appear to convert dissolved gold from the soil into solid nanoscale particles inside the tree’s tissues. While the tiny specks aren’t worth extracting, the discovery opens doors to greener, plant-based methods for mineral exploration and shows how nature quietly engineers its own chemistry.
