Some People Never Retire from Engineering Today I spent a few hours with an engineer whose passion for metallurgy, mechanical testing, welding, materials, and quality has remained unchanged despite decades in the profession. Walking through a workshop surrounded by shelves of old textbooks, rare technical references, standards, manuals, research papers, and industry knowledge collected over a lifetime was a reminder that true engineering is far more than a profession—it is a way of life. What impressed me most was not the collection itself, but the mindset behind it. While many people count the days to retirement, some continue learning, questioning, teaching, and solving problems simply because they love the craft. Their motivation is no longer a paycheck; it is the satisfaction of understanding a problem, sharing knowledge, and helping industry improve. We spent hours discussing metallurgy, quality, engineering ethics, failures, inspections, workmanship, and lessons learned from real projects. The depth of practical knowledge gained from decades of hands-on experience cannot be found in textbooks alone. It comes from seeing what works, what fails, and why. The conversation reinforced something I have always believed: engineering judgment is built through curiosity, discipline, integrity, and a lifelong commitment to learning. Age may slow the body, but passion keeps the mind sharp. Many young engineers possess energy and ambition. The best among us combine that energy with the wisdom, patience, and perspective earned through experience. Today was a reminder that technical excellence is not measured by age, titles, or positions. It is measured by the willingness to keep learning, keep contributing, and keep caring about doing things right. Some people work in engineering. Some people live engineering. I left inspired. #Metallurgy #MechanicalEngineering #MaterialsEngineering #WeldingEngineering #QualityControl #QualityAssurance #EngineeringEthics #EngineeringLeadership #OilAndGas #Manufacturing #Inspection #ContinuousLearning #ProfessionalEngineering #MaterialsScience #EngineeringExcellence #KnowledgeSharing #WorkEthic #IndustrialEngineering #LifelongLearning #EngineeringLife

Carbon Fiber (CF) composites deliver exceptional performance. When properties are normalized for weight, they significantly outperform both steel and aluminum in strength, stiffness, and fatigue resistance. A key engineering note: CF materials require careful design consideration in torsion-critical applications. #MaterialsEngineering #CarbonFiber #Composites Source: youtube.com/watch?v=FNM-d5IP…

Have you noticed that some people who win construction jobs are not even engineers? Some cannot design a foundation. Some cannot analyse a structure. Some cannot prepare detailed drawings. Yet they keep winning projects. Why? Because they understand something many engineers ignore: Construction is both an engineering profession and a business. Many engineers spend years mastering concrete design, steel design, surveying, and project execution. These are important skills. But very few take time to learn: - How contracts are won - How tenders are prepared - How projects are financed - How clients make decisions - How to price jobs profitably - How to build strategic relationships - How to negotiate and close deals As a result, they become highly skilled employees while others become project owners, contractors, and business leaders. Think about it. Two engineers graduate from the same university. Ten years later, one is waiting for project assignments from his employer. The other is creating jobs, employing engineers, and bidding for projects worth hundreds of millions. The difference is not necessarily intelligence. The difference is that one learned engineering alone, while the other learned engineering and business. We compress materials development cycles that have historically taken years into weeks. By moving the search upstream, into computation, before physical resources are committed. Simulation changes the quality of candidates that arrive at the build stage. Find how we do it here: bit.ly/4dymB2E #SimulationFirst #MaterialsEngineering

Structural engineers model before they build. Aeronautical engineers run CFD before a prototype enters a wind tunnel. #AdvancedMaterials has traditionally skipped this step because the tools didn't exist to qualify candidates before physical exploration. We're building the computational infrastructure to change that. Learn more here: bit.ly/4dh0Cgq #SimulationFirst #MaterialsEngineering

Fuel, coolant, cladding, and structure—materials dictate reactor performance. India’s PHWR → PFBR → AHWR pathway highlights the evolution from UO₂ to MOX to ThO₂, alongside advanced alloys for extreme environments. A great example of materials enabling sustainability in nuclear energy. #MaterialsEngineering
Today, India takes a defining step in its civil nuclear journey, advancing the second stage of its nuclear programme. The indigenously designed and built Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam has attained criticality. This advanced reactor, capable of producing more fuel than it consumes, reflects the depth of our scientific capability and the strength of our engineering enterprise. It is a decisive step towards harnessing our vast thorium reserves in the third stage of the programme. A proud moment for India. Congratulations to our scientists and engineers.
