We tested 50 African engineers for remote roles.
Here’s what surprised us.
It wasn’t technical ability.
Most could code.
What stood out was something else entirely.
1️⃣ Communication beat raw skill
The strongest engineers weren’t the ones with the flashiest solutions.
They were the ones who:
clarified requirements early
asked smart questions
explained tradeoffs clearly
Remote work rewards clarity more than brilliance.
2️⃣ Execution gaps appeared fast
Some engineers interviewed well.
But when asked to deliver under real constraints, timelines slipped.
The difference between “knows how” and “can deliver” became obvious within days.
3️⃣ Experience didn’t equal readiness
Years of experience didn’t reliably predict performance.
Some mid-level engineers outperformed seniors because they:
owned outcomes
managed their time well
followed through consistently
4️⃣ Context mattered more than tools
Engineers who understood why they were building something performed better than those focused only on how.
Remote teams break when people work without context.
5️⃣ The talent is real, the filtering is broken
The problem isn’t African tech talent.
It’s how the market evaluates it.
Most hiring processes reward confidence, not competence.
That’s why platforms focused on volume keep failing startups.
Real vetting isn’t about interviews.
It’s about observing performance in realistic conditions.
This test changed how we think about remote hiring and why we built 49GIG the way we did.

I miss coding.
I want to go back to building stuff.
But this time, it's not just me.
I'll be bringing in reinforcements to build projects that save the planet.
I'm talking about inviting Software Engineers who want to take a break from the monitor and create real-life projects that solve problems.
Tech burnout is real, and it’s hitting developers harder than ever. We are tired of building abstract things for billionaires.
We need to do something more meaningful.
So here we are, creating a community of builders.
Software Engineers across the globe who will be Agri-Tech Builders.
Helping smallholder farmers, serving a purpose, and meeting friends along the way.
I'll make sure that I'll post my progress, struggles & hurdles, our achievement for the week, farmer stories, our upcoming events, what we are building now, and our present campaign.
This is going to be fun as I will document my journey.
I do hope (regardless of your profession and background) will support my cause.
My objective is to help the poor smallholder farmers, mitigate climate change with Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA), build innovative Agri-Tech startups, travel, meet people, and hopefully inspire people along the way.
So, as I prepare my Arabica coffee from Benguet province, Philippines.
Open my desktop and start coding.
And start building a community of Agri-Tech builders from scratch.
Let's start building. 🐢
