Thinking about giving this whole Mastodon thing a try, but even figuring out what instance to use is a challenge i can't get past. Fosstodon is probably the closest match, but free/open source isn't my entire identity. It feels weird to have your identity tied to one group.

With something like good ol' IRC or even modern Discord, there are multiple servers, yes, but it's kinda expected that you would have a presence on multiple. With social media, I don't really want to deal with that, even if I technically could.

A few months ago I walked into a music store and a friend there showed me this new @Casio_USA CT-S1000V keyboard. It really blew my mind. So cool and so fun. Type in your own words using their app- enjoy a ton of built in phrases- lots of vocal sound choices. HAD TO HAVE ONE!!

My 11-year son just said this at dinner: “Taxes are the subscription to your country, and childhood is the free trial.”

I’ve written a column about the death of social networks which probably won’t be out until next month — I’ve asked them if they can put it online earlier — but here are two paragraphs I’d like to share regardless:

This interpretation of what’s going on with Musk is pretty much dead on.

I've been using the Firefox accessibility cache thing for months now through the flag, haven't heard an instance of "loading document...." from #NVDASR since, even on larger populated pages. Think a lot of folks will be switching back to it once this rolls out to stable enabled.

Now that Windows 11 supports AAC for Bluetooth audio, I thought perhaps responsiveness might be better with Airpods. Nope, it's still tragically bad, much worse than it is with iOS.

This thing is good. As fast as chrome with screen readers while it's on. At least in Firefox: I haven't tried it very much inside Thunderbird.

Here is my working draft on why I think the Mastodon model has the potential of curing the worst evils of social media and creating a workable public sphere: terikanefield.com/can-the-ma… You can find me here on Mastodon: @Teri_Kanefield@mstdn.social

Word on the street is that as the Twitter revamp continues they're going to change the name of the service to Bitter. But don't worry, at least the logo won't change, they'll still continue giving us the Bird.

If you've upgraded to macOS Ventura, you might've encountered a bug where VoiceOver's quick nav/rotor don't work as expected in Firefox. We've got a fix in Nightly and it should hit Beta soon :) bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bu…

So a dialog popped up saying Windows needed to restart to update, with restart and remind me later buttons. I pressed escape, which restarted, interrupting my work, because it totally makes sense for escape to restart instead of remind me later. Then the update failed... again.

Here's the thing, Windows. I don't want to restart to apply the Windows 11 update because the last 30 times I've tried, it's failed and rolled back. And then Windows downloads the same update again, and around and around we go. It's a good thing I don't have a download quota.

Nicknamed Wi-Peep, the device can “see” through walls, surreptitiously identifying the locations of smart watches, phones, laptops and the like, with speed and accuracy. What does it mean for your privacy? trib.al/H5ahcNp

Elon Musk said permanent bans shouldn’t happen, free speech is guaranteed and comedy is now allowed on Twitter. Until Kathy Griffin, a comedian, used her free speech to tease him and then he permanently banned her.
