I hear that a backbench MP will be reintroducing the assisted suicide bill. I cannot think of a more tone-deaf thing to do at a time of national malaise, particularly as the bill divides the Labour Party, and has been rejected by every medical royal college that took a view.

Considerations for bringing back this exact same Bill (and it would have to be the same, if Parliament Acts is used): 1. The Royal College of Physicians have said her Bill is unsafe 2. The Royal College of Psychiatrists have said the Bill is unworkable, and unsafe 3. The British Geriatrics Society have said the Bill’s safeguards are not adequate 4. Domestic abuse charities have said the Bill is unsafe 5. Organisations representing disabled people have said the Bill is unsafe 6. Royal College of GPs says the Bill lacks adequate safeguards 7. Lord Stevens, ex NHS CEO, said legislating for assisted dying in the current climate of hospice cuts is “utterly ridiculous” 8. MIND says the safeguards are not adequate 9. The CLADD group at KCL have said the Bill is “not fit for purpose” 10. The British Association of Social Workers say the Bill’s is not safe enough 11. The Association for Palliative Medicine have said this Bill is unsafe

How about introducing a Private Members Bill to provide equitable access to palliative care across England and Wales? Rather than starting with a Private Members Bill for Assisted Dying? The sequence would be hugely important, given that so many cannot access basic care.

We have a lot of historical records of exam papers like this. Frustratingly, we have far fewer records of what the students actually wrote in response! Maybe their responses were all brilliant. Maybe some of them were terrible. My colleagues wrote a paper on standards in A-level maths over time, and finding archive responses was really hard! Eventually they were able to compare responses from 1964, 1968, 1996 and 2012. Standards had declined dramatically between 1968 & 1996. Interesting to hear @SKinnock make the point in the health select committee that the #assisteddying bill has been a positive thing because it has encouraged people to talk more about death and dying. My experience is that it has increased fear about death and dying as the majority of the campaign has been about death being awful and something that must be controlled through ending lives early. Can he really claim this as a positive outcome? Particularly without robust evidence to support this? We need to talk about #normaldying and not pretend a campaign to legalise assisted dying has provided the education the public need.

This is breathtaking dishonesty.

The CQC has for a long time failed to demonstrate that they understand the principles of well-led, effective and fair assessment. Their assessments are therefore unsafe. And they are anything but responsive.

I'm calling on the govt to support the amendment by @lucianaberger to extend the minimum age under this Bill - perhaps the most consequential of this generation - to 25, not 18. We must err on the side of caution when it comes to children's rights and lives.

I used to think the main damage from social media was to youth mental health. Now I believe that the global destruction of the human ability to pay attention may be even larger. A meta-analysis shows the damage, to adults as well as teens, from TikTok psycnet.apa.org/fulltext/202…
