Some genes are highly specific to male-induced demise whereas others are regulators of longevity in both a single- and mixed-sex setting. We found two novel longevity genes that when knocked-down extend C. elegans hermaphrodite lifespan in the presence and absence of males.

In contrast, for many classical long-lived mutants (e.g. daf-2/insulin-IGF-1 & mitochondrial ETC), mates are their Achilles' heel. While long-lived in a single-sex setting, these individuals are actually short-lived (hypersensitive) in the presence of males.
