LAPD Officer Saved by Vest After Suspect Opens Fire LOS ANGELES, California — June 9, 2026 — A Los Angeles Police Department officer was wounded and an armed suspect was critically injured following a police pursuit and exchange of gunfire in Boyle Heights on Tuesday afternoon. According to LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell, the incident began shortly after 2 p.m. when Newton Division officers observed a man allegedly armed with a handgun inside a Toyota pickup truck near Washington Boulevard and Alameda Street. Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the driver fled, leading officers on a pursuit through Los Angeles streets. The pursuit ended near the intersection of Marietta and Garnet streets in Boyle Heights when the suspect lost control of the truck during a left turn and crashed into a fence and embankment. The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, exited the truck and fled on foot. McDonnell said the suspect drew a handgun and fired at pursuing officers while running. One officer was struck in the chest by at least one round. The officer’s ballistic vest stopped the bullet, preventing a life-threatening injury. Multiple officers returned fire, striking the suspect. The suspect was taken into custody at the scene and transported to a hospital, where he underwent surgery and remained in critical condition Tuesday evening. The injured officer was hospitalized in stable condition and is expected to recover. Police recovered a handgun at the scene. Investigators had not publicly released the suspect’s identity, age, or potential charges as of Tuesday night. Authorities also had not disclosed how many rounds were fired by either the suspect or officers. Chief McDonnell stated that preliminary video evidence indicated the suspect fired first. The shooting remains under investigation by the LAPD. SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (June 4, 2026) - The San Francisco Police Officers Association will join Mayor Daniel Lurie, Supervisor Bilal Mahmood, members of the San Francisco Police Department, community leaders and Officer Elia Lewin-Tankel and his family at Noon, Thursday, June 4, for the official unveiling of "Officer Lewin-Tankel Way," a commemorative street designation honoring the officer's courage, sacrifice and dedication to the people of San Francisco. The ceremony will take place at 301Eddy St. in the Tenderloin, where Officer Lewin-Tankel sustained life-altering injuries while responding to a dangerous call for service on October 18, 2017. While on bicycle patrol, Officer Lewin-Tankel responded to reports of an armed suspect fleeing police through the Tenderloin. As he arrived on scene, the suspect struck him with a vehicle, leaving him unconscious and critically injured. Officer Lewin-Tankel survived, but was left permanently disabled. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously approved in April a resolution establishing the commemorative street designation, citing Officer Lewin-Tankel's heroism, dedication to public service, and the lasting sacrifices made by both him and his family. "Officer Lewin-Tankel demonstrated extraordinary courage in the line of duty and paid an unimaginable price while serving the people of San Francisco," said SFPOA President Louis Wong. "This designation ensures that his sacrifice, and the sacrifices made by his family, will never be forgotten. We are grateful to Mayor Lurie, Supervisor Mahmood, and the Board of Supervisors for recognizing a true hero." "Today, we honor not only Officer Lewin-Tankel's service, but the enduring example he set for generations of San Francisco police officers. A street name becomes part of a city's map, but true legacy lives in the lives touched, the community protected, and the values passed on to those who follow. “On behalf of the San Francisco Police Officers Association, I want to thank Mayor Daniel Lurie, Supervisor Bill Mahmood, Chief Scott, the SFPD command staff, and especially Officer Lewin-Tankel's family for helping preserve that legacy. This dedication ensures that every person who passes this street will be reminded of a police officer who answered the call to serve with courage, professionalism, and commitment to the people of San Francisco. “Officer Lewin-Tankel's name now has a permanent place in the city he served so faithfully. We are proud to stand with his family and colleagues as we celebrate a life and career that will never be forgotten. We are so lucky and fortunate to have Officer Lewin-Tankel with us here today." The designation adds the commemorative name "Officer Lewin-Tankel Way" to the 300 block of Eddy Street between Leavenworth and Jones streets.
