Congress funded PEPFAR. The money exists. Yet @CDCgov’s role in most countries ends September 30 by administrative guidance, not by law. That gap — between what the legislature authorized and what the executive will operationally deliver — is not a funding problem. It’s a structural one. We route global health through institutions never designed to carry it, then act surprised when a single guidance memo can unwind two decades of capability. As @HouseForeign and its members @RepBrianMast @RepMikeLawler amend the Foreign Service Act via the Foreign Service Modernization Act, they should consider building a dedicated Foreign Health Service architecture for this mission. You don’t fix that with more money. You fix it with architecture built for the mission. That’s the case I made in Think Global Health last week. thinkglobalhealth.org/articl…#PEPFAR #GlobalHealthSecurity #ForeignHealthService @ChrisCoons @LindseyGraham @BrianSchatz @BarbaraLee @JeanneShaheen @RepBrianMast @AmbCdeBaca @RepSaraJacobs @RepAdamSmith @globalhealth @PEPFAR

The Trump administration got the diagnosis right: U.S. health diplomacy needed clearer leadership. Then it turned the CDC into a vendor you buy by the service. That undercuts the very strategy it's meant to serve — and there's a fix that makes America safer. thinkglobalhealth.org/articl…

The answer isn't choosing between diplomatic leadership and technical capability. It's both: a Foreign Health Service that joins trained diplomats to CDC's appropriated expertise. We built exactly this for trade in 1980 — the Foreign Commercial Service @ExportGov part of the @CommerceGov. We've never done it for health. @PEPFAR shows ambassador-led works.

.@Wizara_afyaTZ has declared the MVD outbreak in Tanzania over. Throughout the disease response, U.S. embassy health experts in Tanzania provided technical assistance and on the ground support. With the active disease outbreak declared over, the U.S. government will continue working closely with TZ’s Min of Health to investigate the origins of the Kagera outbreak, and ultimately prevent future outbreaks, ensuring Americans and Tanzanians remain healthy and safe.

Health is a foreign policy imperative and the U.S. remains committed to strengthening #GlobalHealthSecurity. In this clip, @SecBlinken explains why @StateDept worked with Congress to create the Bureau of Global Health Security and Diplomacy.
