Area 1 Shopping Complex Comes Alive The National Fire Safety Week outreach continued today at Area 1 Shopping Complex, Garki Abuja, and the response was nothing short of remarkable. The entire complex was fully engaged as Federal Fire Service officers conducted a series of live demonstrations and hands on training sessions designed to strengthen everyday fire preparedness in one of Abuja’s busiest commercial hubs. Crowds gathered on all levels of the plaza as officers led practical, step-by-step sessions on the proper use of fire extinguishers, deployment of a fire blanket, and basic emergency response techniques. Business owners, workers, shoppers, and passersby eagerly took turns practicing under close supervision, gaining confidence in skills that could one day save lives and property. The atmosphere grew even more electric during the fire appliance demonstration. The plaza erupted in excitement as our crew executed a full water-jet display, sending powerful streams of water arcing high into the Abuja skyline. Many spectators expressed amazement, seeing such coordinated professional fire response up close for the first time. The large turnout and active participation show how much the community values real fire safety knowledge when it is brought directly to them. Beyond the visual spectacle, today’s event delivered something deeper: a shift from “Not My Portion Mentality” to practical readiness. Area 1 has set a strong example of community engagement, and we appreciate the leadership, traders, and visitors for their enthusiasm, cooperation, and commitment to a safer environment. Warm. Dry. Windy. And a lot of fuel. Sound like a familiar story? It’s fire season folks. Which means it’s time to be ready to roll the second you see smoke in the sky. 1. Keep a UTV/ATV loaded with a sprayer (if filled with water - keep it protected from freezing). We park ours next to a faucet. 2. Add to your firefighting arsenal a leaf blower, driptorch, torch fuel (60/40 diesel / gas) and backpack sprayer in a handy location or secured on UTV. 3. Ensure everything is topped off with fuel and is operating. 4. Print ranch maps thst show gates, roads, and water sources (and have combos to locks if needed). Put your cell phone number and name on the map. 5. If you have radios, keep them charged and easy to grab out the door. Might be a good way to communicate with responding neighbors. 6. Be prepared with your local VFD phone number and county dispatch saved in your phone. 7. Watch the forecasts and be familiar with wind direction and frontal movements. 8. Have a containment plan for protecting the Alamo. Ample garden hoses, alternate water storage, and independent pumping capabilities. 9 Have a day or night plan for pets and livestock at HQ. 10. Have a plan for opening gates or cutting fences where livestock are threatened where they’re confined. #Rangelands #fireready #RollReady

Recently, @CALFIREBDU led a wildfire safety training for journalists and broadcast staff in the Greater Los Angeles region. Media staff from NBC4, CBS Los Angeles/KCAL, and ABC7 Los Angeles joined us to learn about wildfire behavior, emergency protocols, and how to navigate the fireground safely and responsibly.
