9 Stretching Asanas - Day 9/27 Flexibility Routine 1. Child’s Pose (Balasana) - Kneel, sit back on heels, fold forward, arms extended or by sides. - Hold: 5–10 breaths. Deep back & hip release. 2. Cat-Cow Pose (Marjaryasana-Bitilasana) - On all fours, alternate arching (Cow) and rounding (Cat) the spine. - Do 5–8 rounds. Spinal flexibility warm-up. 3. A kettlebell variation of the traditional Chinese martial arts hamstring/calf stretch called “Old Monk Takes Off Boot” (Lao seng tuo xue, 老僧脫靴): • Hinge at your hips—don’t bend through your lower back; that’s the most common mistake. • Stretch the hamstrings and calves, not the lower back. The goal isn’t to get lower by cheating but to increase your flexibility. • Lift your tailbone about 45° toward the ceiling. You probably know this excellent stretch. Here’s a tip to make it even better. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ First, test your toe touch — both sitting and standing. Then test your hamstring stretch, just like in the photo above. And then: ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣”Do the above stretch again but this time hook two toes with the belt instead of the⁣ whole foot. Stretch the toes back as you are stretching the hamstrings. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣Work your way through all of your toes two at a time. You will experience different stretching effects and feel the stretch in different parts of your body depending on which toes you use. For example you may feel more stretch in your calves, in your hams or even way up in the glute. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣After you have patiently worked your toes in two toe combinations, start again working the toes singularly. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣Finally re-hook your whole foot and retest the hamstring stretch. [TUTORIAL] A simple hamstring stretch from our #StrongFirst #SFB #Bodyweight curriculum ...to improve your deadlifts, kettlebell swings, snatches, pistol squats, kicks, jumps... you name it! Quote: - Lie on your back inside a doorway. Raise one straight leg and place its heel on the doorway. You may place your hand on the quad of the stretched leg to help yourself keep the knee straight—but not hyperextended. - Keep the other leg down and straight. Do not allow it to externally rotate: the toes must point up, not to the side. Your pelvis is on the ground. You are feeling a moderate stretch in your hamstring. - Visualize making your spine and both of your legs “longer,” projecting out through your heels. - Relax and breathe out through the tight spots. When the stretch abates, carefully inch your pelvis closer to the doorway until you feel the stretch again. Repeat the drill. - Halfway into the stretch pull up the kneecap of the stretched leg and slowly move the leg away from the doorway an inch or so. Make circles with your ankle. This becomes even more important when you play a sport that requires a high frequency of speeding up (accelerating), slowing down (decelerating) and then speeding up again (reaccelerating).
