Intellectual Property (IP) is property in every sense. It can be owned, rented, sold, collateralised, and exploited for economic benefit. The steps businesses can take to leverage this valuable characteristic of IP are identifying their assets, implementing protection measures, and devising strategies to grow their business through these intangible resources.
In today’s knowledge-driven economy, intangible assets such as trademarks, patents, copyrights, trade secrets, and designs have become central to business value. Yet many organisations overlook the wealth tied up in these assets.
In this paper co-authored by members of our Intellectual Property practice unit, namely, Okenna Onyelu, Bruno Ibegbunam, and Chiamaka Anakua, we explore how IP auditing helps businesses identify what they truly own, assess the strength and value of their IP portfolio, and uncover opportunities for commercialisation. For forward-looking businesses, active IP stewardship is the path to sustainable profitability and innovation-driven success.
