We ran a 30-day experiment comparing solid agar media vs temporary immersion bioreactors for potato micropropagation. The results? Not what we expected.
We tested 5 treatments: traditional solid media (control) and four bioreactor schedules with different immersion frequencies—every 24 hours, 12 hours, 6 hours, and 1 hour.
All used hormone-free MS medium. Same explants. Same conditions.
The only difference: how often the bioreactor immersed the plants in liquid media.
The results after 30 days:
Best performer: Hourly immersion (1h/10s) produced 16.9 shoots per explant with an average height of 24 cm—double the height of solid media plants.
Solid media: 14.7 shoots, 11 cm tall. Respectable baseline.
But here's the shock: The 12-hour immersion schedule completely failed. Only 7.4 shoots per explant at 9 cm tall—worse than solid media.
Key lesson: Bioreactor immersion timing is critical. You can't just pick random schedules and hope for the best.
➡️ When optimized correctly (hourly or daily cycles), bioreactors produced shoots twice as tall with more vigorous growth—all without growth hormones.
Wrong schedule? You get worse results than traditional methods.
Optimized bioreactors mean higher multiplication rates, better plantlet quality, and automation benefits—but only when both the system and the protocol are aligned.
Because in tissue culture, results don’t come from equipment alone or protocols alone—they come from how well the two are optimized together.
